NYU... Will I Make the Cut?

I'm a sophmore right now and I've been slacking, as a result I've got a pretty low GPA of 3.1 X_X I'm scheduled to take two A.P classes next year and of course get my GPA way up. But, that's if I stay. In reality there's a 90% chance I'll be studying abroad in Italy next year. I know this will look great on my application, but how far will it take me? (specifically to the NYU admissions staff) I'm worried that as a reult of studying abroad they'll have no option but to look at my sophmore GPA, which probably won't get me in. Studying aborad in high school says a lot about a persons maturity and independence, but is that good enough? I of course haven't taken the SAT or ACT yet, but I'm hoping with a solid score on those (mainly SAT) plus my EC's, essay, and studying aborad I'll be a good candidate. What do you think? Do I have a chance? Is Studying abroad worth it, or should I stay and focus on rasing my GPA?

NYU’s acceptance graph says they only admitted five people with a GPA of 3.1 or lower. Those were all student athletes. If you bump up the numbers of APs you take, receive at least a 2100 on your SAT, and achieve a 4.0 next year you may be able to get in if you apply to their Early Decision program. With a 4.0 next year, you will have a cumulative GPA of 3.4 and, combined with high SAT scores, you will have a fair chance of getting in. Save your trip to Italy for Senior Year!!! While NYU might look for well roundedness in an applicant, they will primarily look for cold, hard numbers. Taking your trip senior year will show well roundedness and allow you to increase your GPA and take your SATs in a preferable setting.

Apply early decision for sure. Make sure you do well in Italy and get a high GPA there. Make sure essays explain your high GPA in Italy and how you’ve matured from the person you were sophomore year that had a 3.1.

If you can kill the sat (2000+) I think you’ll be golden!

Chance back!
