Currently I am a Junior in high school and I have been dreaming of going to NYU since the beginning of freshman year. Is NYU really all that is cracked up to be? Do you think I would fit in? I am very liberal, extremely passionate about international relations, languages, human rights, the environment...really anything global. I love big cities too and I need to get outside of Wisconsin haha.
Thanks!

I’m sure you’ll fit in just fine. As with any college, students are so diverse that you’ll find people with similar views by simply turning a corner. Moreover, although I’m not a primary source, you don’t need to “fit in” like you seem to need to in high school. Everyone at university (especially one as rigorous as NYU) is merely trying to graduate.

NYU has one of the best study abroad programs- looks like your cup of tea…

I’m sure you would love it but go to their website and check out the cost of attendance. Their site says the estimated expenses for one year in the College of Arts and Sciences is $73,999. Their average financial aid award is $26,000. As a freshman you can only borrow $5500. It’s wonderful if your family can stroke a check each semester for those costs. Most families can’t. It’s important that you talk to your parents now about how much they will contribute to college. These are the estimated expenses for one year. It is listed on a page for international students. The cost is the same but you won’t have to prove you have the cash upfront like an international and you possibly won’t need the $3500 health insurance:

There are other universities in or near NYC you would love as much. You have several months to explore some options. NYU is famous on this site for “gapping” admitted students. Do a search. I just thought I’d point this out so you can seek your own information and not be surprised in the spring of your senior year. Apply but apply to safeties you know you can afford. Good luck!
