I think you have a pretty good chance, your ec's are very nice. However I also agree that you might wnana raise ur math sat scores, even though you're majoring in journalism, it would give you a lot better chance.

Also I dont know if this is gonna change for next year, but when I visited NYU last year as a junior (I'm a senior now, going to attend NYU in the fall), they said that they only look at the math and verbal sections of the SAT, and is still "collecting data" with the new writing section.

Well im definately going to work on my Math score, its always been my Achilles heel though!
simple_minded- i believe that they WILL be taking the writing section into consideration for the class of 2008. Seeing how i want to get into journalism hopefully a strong score there should help.
Im definately applying ED, that should boost my chances right?
Also is it true that doing the IB curriculum is a huge advantage?
Thank you for all your replies!

I think that you have a great chance at NYU. As everyone else has said, work on the sat math score. I'm not sure if being IB is a HUGE help... I'm a fellow IBer myself and I got in so I guess they like it. In my personal and extremley biased opinion, I think that IB Diploma candidates should be a bit above just AP classes because each subject requires like 3 tests (or more if you include IAs and EAs), you have to do annoying CAS reflections, you have to do the EE, and your competing for your grade internationally. Don't get me wrong though - AP is cool too.

But that has nothing to do with NYU. Sorry for that little rant. You have a great shot.

PS: Getting a 7 in History HL is extremley extremley hard. Like 1% or 2% in the entire world. But all the more power to you if you're some history genius.

Well all 3 of my HLs are apparently really hard to get 7's in!
If you dont mind me asking what was your predicted grade/final score? And what are you majoring in?
Also how competitive are places for Journalism majors at CAS?

We don't really do predicted scores at my school and I don't know my final scores yet as I have yet to even take the tests. I did test out of SL Psych last year with a 7. If I had to guess at my scores...

HL English: 6-7 range (I'm really good at english)
HL History: 5
HL Biology: 6
SL Math Studies: 6
SL Spanish: 5-6

I really don't think NYU cares at all about predicted scores though. They see IB on your transcript and know that you're taking hard stuff.

I applied and got into Gallatin, so I guess I don't really have a major. I alluded to music journalism on my application, but I'm also really thinking about more creative writing ie. screenplayish kind of stuff.

I have no idea how competitive CAS journalism spots are. I would guess that they would be fairly competitive. If you're concerned about it being too competitive just apply as undecided.

I don't necessarily know how competitive the spots are, but I was accepted into the journalism program this year.
These are some of my stats, if you want any idea from those.
ACT: 31
Class rank: 29/563
Top 6%
SATIIs: Math: 650, Lit: 650
and many, many ECs.

Gallatin...So thats where you can mix and match your courses?
I was looking at that as well, could you please tell me how it compares to CAS in terms of selectivity, coursework, teaching etc.
Thanks!

I think that CAS and Gallatin are pretty much on the same level as far as selectivity. Some people say that Gallatin is a bit easier to get into, others don't. Rumor has it Gallatin puts more emphasis on the subjective parts of your app (especially the essays) and they're a bit more forgiving numbers wise. I could see this making it easier and harder to get into.

At Gallatin you take some Gallatin courses but you also can take courses from any school at NYU. If you want to know more about Gallatin, I would recommend going to nyu's gallatin website.

No, if you're applying E.D., you have to have completed all of your tests by Nov. 1, otherwise there is no guarantee that they'll be considered.

^ Which means that you prob want to take the October tests at the latest, as scores usually take a monthish to come out, which means they could have easily already reviewed your application.

If I were you I would take the either the SAT I or SAT II's in May and take the other one in June. I took my SAT I in May, but now that I think about it, I probably should've done the SAT II's in May because that's when my AP exams were (that way there's no need to study twice).

As an ED, you actually don't have that much time left for SAT's. Because if by some fluke you don't do well on your SAT I's now, you're gonna want to take it again in October (I dont think theres one in september), which would be your last chance at taking the SAT's before your ED deadline.
