i'm from india and i've been accepted at both RIT and NYUPOLY for a masters in electrical engineering........i'm not able to make a decision.......i've been hearing lot of different things from different people .........poly is giving me a better scholarship and ny has a better social life than rit also rit has a quarter pattern as opposed to poly's semester pattern........but people are advising me that rit is better coz it has better job placements .which should i chose?

I think of NYU Poly as being more prestigious than RIT. I’ve worked with (and hired) several Poly alumni and one RIT alumnus. All were good engineers, but the Poly ones were better.

If there’s a valid reason to choose RIT over NYU-Poly for a Master’s in EE, then it’s definitely not job placement…promise. I’m doing my BS in EE at Poly, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask! Note, that I don’t know much about RIT; moreso, I know Poly’s strong points.

Somebody please help ??? I have 2 options basically even though I got accepted to RPI as well a friend of my uncles has a bachelors in mechancical engineering degree and a masters in enviormental engineering and he advised me if I want to work in NYC or in the surrounding area go with NYU Poly even though RPI is ranked better. The first option is to go to NYU Poly now and spend 3 1/2 years there and graduate with mechancal engineering degree with $77,000 in debt . I’ve talked to my assgined admissions counselor and shes like telling me to transfer now because the longer i stay at a outside institution I will risk loosing more credit which I think is not true. The reason why I think its not true is because my second option is to stay where im at now for 1 more year and get an associates degree in engineering science which i compared to the mechancial engineering degree, and the first two years are identical therefore, this route would save me 1 year of time at NYU Poly and it would take me 2 1/2 years instead. In addition I feel like my assigned admissions counsleor and other ones I talked are really just trying to sell me on the pitch that coming to NYU Poly now is the best option in which im not dumb and I know at the end of day most admissions counslors dont look out for the best option for the student because its a business and there sole purpose is to get you to come no matter what. Please let me know what you guys think of all of this? and give me your opinions on what you would do ? because I really want to go to NYU Poly thats my goal no matter what. Whether I enter in the fall or get my associates first. I have family in the city as well and live outside the city and this is the school that I believe will help me out the most in landing an engineering job in the surrounding area and develop me in becoming a good engineer. Thanks for your time and effort.

mikecam91, bro go for rpi, it hasa a better ranking than nyupoly, and forget about staying in your current school. But if money is gonna a problem for you then choose nyu poly and go to a top grad school after graduation.

You need to ask your question about graduate school admissions in the Grad School Forum. Here is the link: [Graduate School - College Confidential](Graduate School - College Confidential Forums)

You also should ask potential employers in India whether or not they prefer graduates of one of these programs over graduates of another. After you complete your studies, and any OPT time, if you have not found an H-1B visa sponsor, you will have to leave. Be sure that whatever you study here will get you a job in your home country.

mike i hope you get my private message.

As a fellow poor person, I highly vote against 77k of debt.

77k in debt for NYU poly is a BAD deal (assuming you don’t have most of it already). My advice:

Finish your associates in engineering science.

Move to a state with a respected flagship that you think you can get into and afford with in state tuition (think UCLA, Texas, UMCP, Penn State, Michigan, or a non-flagship state school if it’s more affordable)

Work a lower level engineering job as long as it takes for you to get state residency.

Complete your degree at said state schools.

That seems like a good plan if residency doesn’t take that long to acquire and if the in state tuition is affordable. Otherwise, have you looked at the CUNYs and SUNYs?

Both are about the same. 2 years ago, before NYU bought Polytechnic University, Poly was ranked a tier 3 school.
