I am so confused about this whole thing I don't really know where to start.. :

Ok, so first of all I was wondering: Is the New Studio on Broadway (MT) program considered a regular major?

I'm actually planning on applying to NYU Film School, and wanted to know if it's possible to also apply for the Musical Theatre program at Tisch. Also, is it possible to apply for it after enrolling as a Film Major? (if I am accepted, that is.. :P)
Is this considered double majoring?

So I guess what I'm mainly asking is if this combination is even possible or not..

There is a rule with Tisch School of the Arts that you cannot double major anything within the school ( i.e. Theater/Film, Theater/Dance, Art/Film etc). If you go to the open house for Tisch, they will state this statement.

You can double major it is a major in Tisch and a major in the College of Arts and Science.

You can apply for both but at the end, you will have to choose between Theater OR Film.

Actually, there are some double majors within Tisch that can be done. I"m pretty sure that Dramatic Writing and Acting can be done. But, I don’t think that you can do it as a freshman, and it still requires an artistic review for the second major.

The options for double majoring in Tisch are limited (and I don’t know what they all are) and Arts & Sciences is the only other college from which a second major can be chosen. There are minors that can be done within Tisch and in connection with the other NYU colleges.

From my understanding that any of the Acting programs at Tisch are very difficult really impossible to double major with…My dd is a senior at Tisch in the Film/TV major and I know that with her schedule trying to add acting in would be impossible. She did manage to get 2 minors one in English and one in Entertainment Business from Stern…

I would definitely pick one and focus on that. Then try to add variety by doing a minor.

So if double majoring in those fields is not an option is there a minor in Musical Theatre that you happen to know about?

I also heard about the Musical Theatre major through the Steinhardt School. I don’t quite understand the difference actually. I tried looking on their site but it’s just all the more confusing and not very explanatory…

I just really want to opt for this Film/MT combination as I don’t want to give up on Film as my major but also really want to have MT in my curriculum as well. Even not as a major. If not NYU, is there another school maybe that offers something like that?

My dd suggests that you look into Gallatin Division. It is a make your own major. It’s conceivably how Dakota Fanning is continuing to be a working actress at NYU. NYU isn’t very accommodating with working actors. So, with a degree from Gallatin Dakota can design her own major and mix and match with course.

If your really interested I suggest you contact Gallatin about options.

Tisch has an Open Arts program, in which it offers selected classes to all NYU students. So, there might be some opportunities there, and the minors it offers are also on the Tisch page (look under the special programs tab).

You might want to look at some LACs / a BA program at a university, not a BFA. A BFA requires that a minimum number of credit hours. You will have more flexibility with a BA and more room for a greater variety of courses.

Also, I don’t think that any working actors who attend NYU’s Gallatin go there for acting training, but for a college education. Some professional actors – such as Haley Joel Osment and Mara Wilson – did go to Tisch Drama undergrad, but I have no idea if they were working professionally during the school year (I would really doubt it). Gideon Glick (Spring Awakening) is at least one actor who currently attends the school, but not in Tisch, and works professionally at the same time – or maybe he alternates semesters with work. IDK.

Hi Niaxerre
I heard the question of the Tisch NSB MT vs Steinhart MT asked at an info session and the Tisch rep explained that Tisch is an acting based program while Steinhart is music based. The degree offered at Tisch is a BFA in Drama Steinhart i believe offers a BM (Bachelor of Music)
While NSB students take piano, sight singing, ear training, dance etc, a major component of the studio training is Acting. They are training actors who can get work (God willing!)in both musicals and straight plays. Hope this helps!

You’ve been really helpful and I appreciate it! :)

I recently found out about an MT minor at USC and since I’m also applying there I wanted to know if it’s possible to combine it with USC’s Film&Television Production major…?

They’re through different schools – Film major is through SCA and MT minor is through Thornton School of Music – does that matter?

I don’t know much about it but I know someone who is looking at Columbia College in Chicago for combining some kind of film and MT curriculum. You might want to check that out.
