NYU's Opportunity Programs

I received a letter in the mail today stating that I was required to attend an information session followed by an interview. It also said something about my application being referred to the Opportunity program?

Now, what exactly is the Opportunity Program? And did anyone else get this letter?

Look at

http://www.nyu.edu/op/op_home.html

i just went on my interview for that today.. its a 20,000 scholarship program for heop and 10,000 for cstep.. 600 are interviewed and only 150 get accepted

i thought it was for "underqualified" people? like people who's scores, gpa and sat wise, aren't as strong as the others. i didn't know it was for people with financial problems...

it's true that HEOP and C-step helps students through the admission process by examining their financial situation and by assessing their academic achievements and goals. The Opportunity program will work on your side if your GPA and SAT scores are not so stellar compared to the "mainstream" applicants. It will also look at your financial situation. HEOP students are not as wealthy as C-step. HEOP stipend is 850 every semester, a check that can be spent whichever way you'd like, but you're expected to spend it on books and essential college materials. C-step stipend I belive is 150 every semester or so. The Opportunity program also helps you pay for your dorm, up to 10,000 dollars. Furthermore, the program will allow you to request a FREE tutor for anysubject if you need help. It is a wonderful program. The extra classes, summer courses, and workshops during the freshman year may seem daunting, but the benefits of the program outweigh the costs.

Is it an alternative way for entrance to NYU, or are you already accepted if you received that "invitation?"

If it is an alternative way for entrance, then what is the difference between the opportunity program and the GSP?

You could think of it as an alternative....but, unlike GSP, which means you'll have to take w/e classes or programs they have there, if you get into NYU w/ the help of HEOP you'll get into whichever NYU school YOU want.
so I applied for CAS right, and I got into CAS with HEOP, i didn't get thrown back to GSP. They'll put you into GSP, i think, if u dont fit into HEOP or C-step or the NYU's other schools. But with HEOP, if you apply for CAS or w/e you're gonna go to that school, as far as I know.

if they send you a letter saying that you'll be considered for HEOP or C-step then what that means is that the program will look at your money situation. if you're broke enough and have a good gpa enough and make a good impression on them during the inteview
--btw, no one else gets interviews at NYU, so you got a nice chance.
then they'll send a reply back to the CAS or w/e school you wanna get into saying that they like you and you're good for them. Then, big chances are that the NYU school and the Opportunity program agree w/each other and you'll get a nice fat package saying you're accepted to NYU.
however, i see that this is not early decision, which makes things difficult. had you applied early, the program and NYU itself would have more seats or /we and you woulda had a greater chance of getting in.

plus i think only applicants that already live in new york are eligible for these programs, is that right?

yeah, onlly the ppl who live in NY state qualify.

i rlly hope i get in.. if not ill go to hunter.. nd they only cover housing if u live more than 50 miles away for heop.. thats not be.. i live 6 train stops away

well, how well did your interview go? what are your stats?
it's easier to get into NYU through HEOP,honestly...
my h.s college advisor was like "you have a tiny chance, dont apply"
well, i got in, damn her.
it's especially easy if you have like no money....i'm single parented so yeah, i'm poor. good luck.
p.s maybe it'd be a good idea to give them a call or something, say thank you for the inteview, you know you gotta make a reaaalllyy good, innocent impression on them, and then say that you're concerned about your application/reply. do this sometime later.
i applied early and when i called they already told me that they were in favor of me and sent a confirmation letter to the CAS ppl...and basically, there's a good chance you'll get in if they say that.

oo thanks for the tip! im gonna try that.. i have a 3.5 gpa, 640 verbal 680 writing 440 (i kno thats rlly low) math, 3 years track and cross country (track captain) three years key club(volunteer work) and strive (leadership program) 3 years NHS, 2 APs, all honors all four years except for 2 classes, my interview went well.. i was prepared for more questions but mostly she just talked to me and asked me if i had any questions.. she was so nice and cool and i think i did good on interview so if i dont get it its prob cuz other ppl were more qualified than me academically

wat were your stats? wat year are u in?

nice job! dont worry...my stats were horrible. I had like 1010 or something on my SAT, the old version.
My SAT IIs were Lit. Math and Writing, 500 something on Lit, 500 on math, and 600 something on writing.
so, you're way better than me!
ummm, my gpa was in different units, it was like around 88, which is like 3.3 or something.
What saved me: I'm poor, I was founder and president of a club in h.s, i was a city council rep, had a presentation in the Fed. Bank of NY for a competition, yada yada....i was "active."
and I too was in a gifted program, we didnt have Honors, but I was in Humanities Gifted Program, took 5 college courses, had a "difficult" program, so it makes up for my gpa.
I'm in my Freshman year right now.
Who interviewed you?

I requested to be considered for heop at NYU. However, I have not received anything from them. Does this mean I am automatically rejected?

i know she was a doctor.. she had a long last name and when she said it i couldnt really understand her well.. i kno she was a doctor and looked very distinguished loll.. her last name had some ii's and ee's i remember..

did they tell you whether you got accepted after the interview, or do you have to wait like, two more weeks to get a response from them?

you have to wait till april 1st.. just like everyone else.. argg loll

but my interview's the 31st. at 9:30am.

ok everyone stalk me now.

hmmm.. thats weird.. they said our accept/reject letters are gonna be sent out the same time as everyone elses and that wed find out around this friday or saturday..
