Hello everyone! I originally posted this in the NYU forum, but I figured that I'll be able to get more responses in this thread. Anyways, I was accepted into Tisch as a Film & Television major and Chapman as a Creative Producing major. For the past two weeks, I've been having some difficulty choosing between the two. Obviously, their locations are extreme opposites, but I'm more concerned about which program will provide the best for me, not only in the classroom, but outside the classroom (internships). With Tisch, I have NYC in the palm of my hand and a plethora of internship opportunities. With Chapman, I have LA an hour or less away, where all the production studios are. The only problem with Chapman is if you don't have your own car, you're basically screwed (I find bringing a car would add extra expenses with gas, etc.; therefore, I don't plan to take my car with me to college). So I've been leaning towards NYU for the past couple of days, but I wonder if it's worth it going to NYU for my major and being in debt several thousand dollars, even though I received a handful of scholarships and grants (I recently corrected my FAFSA with the 2008 info and I'm going to call the FAO first thing next week about some special circumstances about my parent's income; so there might be some changes in my financial aid). If you were in my position, which school would you choose? I'd appreciate anyone's opinion on this. Thanks in advance! :)

My friend goes to NYU tisch for film now and loves it. As well, in everything I’ve ever heard/read from film people i know, NYU and USC are the best schools for film. Good luck whichever you choose

^^^Great to hear that your friend loves it. I applied to USC, but got rejected :p

Bump! I’d love to read some more feedback :)

Hey, I also got into Chapman and NYU, visited NYU, decided I wanted a “college experience” and didnt want to be an isolated individual in a city. They dont even really have a sense of school spirit. That killed it for me. so im going to UCLA. But, NYU or Chapman. NYU does have more connections, and seems like it provides its students with more complete wholesome instruction. Ive heard that Chapman focuses more on the technical aspects of film making, not as much on the story, more on the camera, ya dig? Alright, goodluck. Id choose NYU, or Chapman, then we can colab during college, lol

Also, if you are looking to get into “the industry” NYU has a much more reputable program. It wont get you the job, but it will get you in the door for the interview.

Chapman is a 4th tier local “university” and does not belong in the same solar system as NYU.

NYU is one of the top film/tv schools on the planet. I am not exaggerating. It is extremely prestigious. The opportunities you get there as a student - you will be studying with the best. One of my friends, for example, took class with a major person in film, and that person got her her first professional job when she graduated. Actually, it started a bit before graduation…

NYC is a hotbed of film and tv. Don’t worry about not being near LA. You’re in the heart of it, in Manhattan. If you choose to move to LA after school, NYU’s rep will follow you there. NYU has connections in the film industry worldwide.

Chapman’s program is not comparable, IMO. Unless you can’t afford NYU, or unless you adore Champman, I’d have you look very, very seriously about going to NYU.

Chapman has an excellent film program. It is a first tier program. Check out their rankings in the PARADE Magazine. I know of students in the program and they’re loving it.

Chapman’s conservatory film school was created in 2006, so of course it lacks the reputation of NYU. That’s very important to consider. But its also important to consider that Chapman has arguably the best facilities and faculty (14 of AFI’s professors moved there as a result of some political fit, along with a handful from USC, Columbia, and NYU), so you will get a great education. And their student’s have been exploding on the film circuit - just recently a Chapman screenwriter won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. What the school has against it though is its suburban location. I think NYU has access to a better pool of actors, and that’s very important. Its a tough choice.

anyone notice that this thread is 2 years old?
