O-Chem 1 & G-Chem 2 concurrently?

Hey all,

I had a chemistry professor suggest taking O-Chem 1 in the fall concurrently with G-Chem 2 to stay on-track for the spring MCAT and '10-'11 app cycle. For all of you who've taken those classes, how hard do you think this would be? As I understand, O-Chem 1 deviates quite a bit from G-Chem concepts and only relies upon G-Chem 2 minimally at most schools. Do you think this is true? With some studying ahead of time, do you think an overall academically strong student with a minimal bio background but decent physics background would be able to do this? I am planning on taking Gen Bio 1 in the fall as well, so it would be Gen Bio 1, Gen Chem 2 and O-Chem 1 for a total of 14 units (no other classes and I could reduce work hours somewhat if I needed to).

First of all, are they three classes with three labs?

Second, it’s doable, but definitely challenging. O-Chem 1 is usually not that difficult. It’s O-Chem 2 that gets very challenging with all mechanisms. O-Chem is very different than Gen-Chem. There is almost no overlaps.

Third, Gen-Bio is a lot of reading. You better be ready for doing lots of problems for chemistry, but also, readings for bio.

I say go for it. You don’t have any other class.
