O Mighty CC Gods, Do I Even Stand a Chance?

Lately, I've been freaking out about getting into college. Most people on here have planned their whole high school career around getting into the Ivies/top tier colleges; I've just started thinking about where I really want to go. Turns out, Yale is my dream school to pursue my love for Science. Yikes. I've been a little late on the planning.

Here are the schools I'm planning on applying to so far:
High Reach - Yale, Duke, Cornell, WUSTL,
Reach - Emory (my mother went there), Johns Hopkins,
Target - Boston University, UVA, UVM
Safety - WPI, UMass Boston

My stats are as follows:

Classes- 9th grade
French II H
Geometry H
English 9 H
Physics H
World History H
String Orchestra

Classes - 10th grade
French III H
AP World History
English 10 H
Biology H
Algebra II H
String Orchestra

Classes - 11th grade
AP Literature and Composition
AP US History
AP Biology
French IV H
PreCalc H
Chamber Orchestra

Classes- 12th grade (what I'm planning on taking)
AP Calculus
AP Chemistry
AP Language and Composition
AP Psychology
French V H
Chamber Orchestra
Online Course: AP Statistics

UW GPA (95/100) - due to a bad Junior year, I ended up with 4 B's and 1 C in Precalc. The math class was horrible, I'm surprised I ended up with the grade I did when the majority of the class ended up with D's for the year. I'm determined to get all A's in 12th grade to make up for last year.

Weighted (100.1/100)
Rank (32/555) - from Soph year, not sure where I stand now

SAT I: 1890
SAT II'S: Literature-660, Biology-600
ACT: 30

My test scores are extremely low. I plan to retake the SATs in Oct (aiming for 2100-2300+). I'm also retaking the ACTs--aiming for a 34+.

Activities:
Volunteering at the local library (200+ hours)
Competitive Equestrian (8 years)

- won the "Most Improved" award at my school (2011)
- won the "Best Effort" award at my school (2012)
I tutor elementary school children in Math and Science (2009-present) & I'm also paid to tutor children struggling in the sciences at my high school.
Learned yoga from BKS Iyengar Institute in Pune, Maharastra (considered the best yoga institute in the world) this summer.

Clubs/Leadership:
Science Seminar (9th, 10th)

Wachusett Science Fair (9th, 10th)
Science Olympiad - won 1st place in the state for Anatomy
Published in National Geographic Traveler and Common Language Project magazines
WPI summer course for biomedical engineering (summer of 2010)
Accelerated summer chemistry course at my high school (summer of 2011)
Volunteered at Deep Griha Society (a society that helps improve the lives of people in the slums of India)
-taught spoken English classes to 6th-9th graders who only knew how to speak Marathi and HindI, also administered HIV/AIDs medications to the patients there. (this summer)

My high school is a pretty competitive school in Massachusetts. I've asked my English teacher and my Orchestra teacher for recs, so I know they'll be good. Currently, I'm working on my college essay, I want it to be amazing.

I know my stats are not impressive (but a girl can hope, eh?). All I know is that I'm incredibly passionate about Science and about helping out in the community/wherever I can. Unfortunately, much of my childhood has been dictated by my eating disorder, and I've spent most of my high school career battling it through recovery. I'm happy to say that I've recovered, but my gpa is a little low since I've been focused on my health instead.

My standardized test scores also need much improvement.

What do you guys think? How can I improve/possibly be a candidate for my top schools?

Do you know you UW GPA on a 4.0 scale? The 95 UW seems kinda high For having all B’s and one C, which will be very detrimental to your reaches.

I’m not sure…I’m guessing its probably a 3.7.

Your scores are very low for your list. A 2100+ is a necessity for these schools. Hopefully you can get it there. Also, your transcript might not be the most palatable with 4 B’s and once C in Junior Year. That’s a huge concern that might kill your application. Your ECs are fantastic, but your junior year will be a killer. You’re not a URM by any chance, are you? If you are, the C and B’s will hurt but the damage will be minimalized.

I’m South Asian (from India), so unfortunately the damage isn’t minimized :(

Is there any way I can save myself from my bad Junior year? Bump

Probably not, ivies are probably out of the question. A C and multiple B’s junior year will hurt you a lot since junior year is often regarded as the most important. If you had test scores to compensate for the low grades you still would not really have a chance. Focus on doing well first semester senior year and try and find some more schools that are realistic.

Thanks. I’ll probably cut out Yale and WUSTL…

You can give a top25 school a try. Just understand its not realistic to count in it. I would place your matches, with your current GPA and SATs mind you, close to the 40-50’s (search around 43-53-ish). Also schools like GW and Northeastern aren’t bad choices. But Idk of you’ll personally go for them.

I’m planning to retest. I didn’t study for my SAT or ACT so that’s an issue. I think I’ll have a good shot applying ED to Johns Hopkins with higher scores.

If you raise your SAT I’s and II’s, then you might raise your chances for JH and Emory. Yale and the Ivies are unlikely, but not impossible. If you develop a “hook”/“spike,” which would mean picking your major, having it be something you’re good at, and having EC’s that are relevant to it, you would also raise your chances. Schools will often pardon a student for a tough year if they explain what made it so difficult. Write your essay about you eating disorder! It will stand out. Good luck! The Ivies are unlikely but nothing is impossible, so keep trying!
