O.O.S student applied. Lets hope I get lucky!

Well I'll give an overall background of myself and what my stats are looking like.

Well I go to a community college in Connecticut majoring in Nuclear Engineering Technology that is ABET accredited. Currently without this semester's grades, I have a 3.54 GPA. In high school, I graduated 3rd in my class.

Some awards that I have won:
Six Sigma Advanced Blue Belt certified (2011)
Dominion scholarship (2010-Present)
Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society member (2010-Present)
Magna Cum Laude (2010)
Member and Secretary of the National Honor Society (2008-2010)
Perfect attendance (2006-2010)
Winchester Memorial scholarship (2010)
SkillsUSA Leadership (2008)

I was a volunteer for the Red Cross in high school and contributed only about 80 hours worth of community service because I was already working.

My required essays are short and to the point. One of the optional essays about hardships was a perfect topic for me. Since I was 16, I was deemed an unaccompanied youth and have been living on my own without support. I was able to graduate 3rd in my class, 4 years of perfect attendance, and other awards while dealing with the stress and emotions of not having support and "house surfing."

I'm currently employed by Dominion, which operates a nuclear power plant in Connecticut where I am employed as a Nuclear Technical Specialist. Before this position, I was on a paid internship in the engineering department because of my scholarship and was hired shortly after the internship period was over. I've been employed as a full time and part time employee since I was 16. (Only 3 years)

I don't have much at my disposal at a "great chance" of being accepted to the University of Texas at Austin since I don't have the 3.7-4.0 GPA and that I am an out of state student. Hopefully that my optional essay and work experience will help me out here.

I was auto-accepted into Texas Tech without even having to submit my final semester grades which I thought was strange. My other two college applications are still on hold because they want my final semester grades. Really hoping for the UT acceptance though.

Well that's a pretty good explanation of what I'm all about and hopefully I may get lucky!

Best of luck to everyone!

(What chances might you think I have of being accepted?)

Anyone have an idea what my chance might be?

Unfortunately, transferring into the Cockrell School of Engineering is extremely competitive. As you said, most transfer students have about a 3.8 to 3.9 GPA. The only people who have no chance are the people who don’t apply, so I definitely think you have a shot for sure.

BTW - not to dwell on your hardships, but what do you mean you’re an “unaccompanied youth” living on your own?

Well I already applied so I was wondering what those chances could have been. After I applied, I started reading more and more about how selective it was for OOS and I was like…Either this was an expensive mistake or I’ll be beyond happy if I got accepted with my credentials.

But to answer/give insight from your question regarding my status, it basically means that I wasn’t in physical custody of parents or a legal guardian. I was considered “homeless” provided that I didn’t have a consistent housing establishment.

Yea, Cockrell is one of the top 6 or 7 engineering schools in the country.

What other schools did you apply to?

Total, I applied to Ohio State University, University of Connecticut, Texas Tech, and then University of Texas.

UCONN and OSU changed both my statuses a week after I applied to “Need grades through 12/11.” Kind of seems like I might have a chance at OSU but I half arsed my application to UCONN because I was tired of writing essays so I gave them a short and simple 1 paragraph response.

Tech accepted me asap. I read around and realized it was no feat being accepted there.

U.T I guess I could consider my “Reach” school. I hate now that I’ve applied, I keep doubting myself and getting all worked up because of the stupid application fee.

If I got accepted into UT and OSU… I’m going to have a huge debate.

Yea, anyone can get into Texas Tech; it’s not competitive at all. I wouldn’t go there if I were you.

I don’t know anything about UConn or OSU other than that neither of their engineering programs are absolutely stellar. (Although they’re both definitely decent schools)

I wouldn’t get your hopes up about UT - Texas residents get priority and after that, you’ll be competing with people from all over the world.

Good luck wherever you end up!!
