OA begins tonight with cookout

Well DS said the week was GREAT! He said they broke into small groups at Hurricane Creek. He had 6 students the first work day and about twice that the second day! He said his group grew cause he was the coolest leader! LOL! He’s even having several over to his house tonight after the banquet. Guess the old junior has made some freshman friends! ROLL TIDE!!

vlines, my S has been hanging out with your S. When I saw that picture, I remember him mentioning his friends names and I sent him a link of that article.

good to hear bamafana!

Bump for those of you considering OA for 2013!

HersheyBear I sent you a PM :)

DS interviewed prospective OA leaders from this year’s freshman class today and also tomorrow. Can’t believe this fall will be 4 years of OA for him. That’s how much he LOVES this program. His roommate was also an interviewer. He met him in OA 3 years ago when they were incoming freshmen and they have been best friends since.

My DS is interested in learning more about both OA & AA. We’ve been looking for information on-line to no avail. Has the application process already started?

The sign-up forms do not appear to be released yet. The program coordinator is Susan Alley (if there has not been a change since last year). She may be able to give you a date of when sign up begins.

Last year the forms were released 2/2 so I would guess it might be some time this week.

Here’s a link to last year’s AA schedule. It might give you an idea of what to expect (this year’s program could be radically different)

As always Class2012Mom, thank you! I should have known you’d have this information at your fingertips…:)

Keep checking this page there should have 2013 dates and registration info up soon :)

I just emailed Susan Alley and received an out of office response that she will be out next week on a recruiting trip and won’t be returning until Feb. 11.

When we apply for OA or AA are we required to pay the fee for the week, or is that something we can do later? With orientation too, it’s a lot to pay in a month…

You are required to pay the fee at the time of application. However, since it is a class, it is covered by the tuition scholarships and is credited back against your first bill.

Oh awesome! I have the NMF scholarship, so I would just get that money credited back to my account for other expenses?

I do not believe the AA or OA fee is covered by the scholarship - at least it was not covered by my son’s Presidential.

NYBama, Susan Alley was AA. Someone else was OA and there is yet another person over both of them. The names escape me at the moment but if no one else posts them I can dig them out for you tomorrow.

The activity fee for AA you pay now was not covered by the Pres tuition scholarship, but when it came time to register for the class, because my S was over 16 credit hours (AA made it 17 hours), the additional tuition cost WAS covered by Pres scholarship.

We got S’s 1098-T from UA recently, however, and I will have to go over that a bit finer, because I don’t think UA included any of his course fees in its calculation of “qualifying” expenses. (We owe taxes on any scholarship that is not going towards what is considered a “qualifying” tuition-related expense.) Stay tuned…

Class2012mom,
Is there any advantage between the two. DS seems to be leaning towards AA since it also involves working with the kids.

Class2012Mom- I went back and checked and AA was covered by my D’s Presidential scholarship. It was listed under the credits as “AA Prepay-Ck $195”. It appeared right after the credit for “Freshman Enrollment Deposit” and “Housing Prepayment.”

Sniner, isn’t that just credit for the fee we sent in?

Aermom, we were not talking about tuition, just the fee.

NYBama, last year due to a change in the date school began in Alabama, the AA kids did not get to work with grade school kids. I would not count on that in weighing your program decision.
