And that ^^ is exactly what I have been afraid of–this will be the silent protest that will occur that we will not see right away. I think we can all agree to disagree at this point (to quote a previous poster) as President Obama is not going to be un-invited at this point. I only hope that the day will be pleasant for the graduates!

I agree. I feel bad for the graduates. If the people doing the silent protesting are as obstinate and judgmental as some people on this thread then it doesn’t look good for graduation day. Narrow-mindedness and standing up for your convictions are two different things. Jesus was able to do the latter without resorting to the former.

Give him the Rudy DVD, give him anything, just not an doctor of laws, honoris causa.

All these postings are so pathetic. A university is supposed to be a place of higher learning, not prejudice. What a shame.

By the way, my father is a ND alum ('57) and is truly saddened that the school he holds so near and dear to his heart is behaving in such a petty way regarding Obama. He fears those who protest Obama’s appearance would rather have had the, shall-we-say, less than intelligent George Bush speak. He finds the whole protest absolutely embarrassing.

It is indeed a shame that on the campus of the most prominent Catholic university in the country, there are so many prejudiced folks who don’t understand the truths of Catholic teachings on the sanctity of life, and who simply don’t see the absolute incoherence of honoring such a rabidly anti-life president, because they have been blinded by mindless adulation of Obama. It is absolutely embarrassing, which is why so many bishops have spoken out against the invitation, and why none have supported it.
And pathetic, too, that so many members of the ND community are willing to toss aside principle in order to brag about snagging the President.

Aldomerdad: You know I agree with you about the honorary degree. On Easter Sunday, someone told me they heard on Fox news that ND would not be giving Obama the honorary degree. Is it true?

With re the withholding of donations: I heard that donations would be decimated anyway due to the lousy market and economy, so all the alums that claim to withhold because of Obama are really just using that as an excuse to mask the fact that they can’t afford to–in other words the University just handed them a face saving excuse.

So whatever…donations were going to be down anyway…why not invite the President?

"All these postings are so pathetic. A university is supposed to be a place of higher learning, not prejudice. What a shame. "

I agree this does not speak well of ND alums, but fortunately the students are more open minded.

Poor, misinformed Claremarie – President Obama is pro-choice, not anti-life. You rabid zealots sure now how to twist a label to your liking.

He is pro-choice, as in he is willing to leave to grown-up, intelligent women their right to choose what is best for their health and well-being which decision, in turn, would be the best decision for the fetus. Imagine – he actually believes women can decide what is best for them and not leave that decision up to those who know absolutely nothing of each woman’s individual circumstance. Truly remarkable – as are your labels.

Pro-“choice” is anti-life. Obama isn’t even willing to provide legal protection to infants born alive as a result of botched late-term abortions. He describes children as a “punishment” for the “mistakes” (i.e., unmarried sexual relations) made by their parents.
He needs our prayers.

Oh, and it is truly remarkable that anyone could suggest that death might be “the best decision for the fetus.”
But that’s what happens when rabid zealots twist the labels. Notice that most of them can’t even bring themselves to use the words “abortion” or “kill.” Instead, they hide behind vague phrases such as “a woman’s right to CHOOSE” and “reproductive rights.”

Please tell me how killing the child can be deemed what’s BEST for the child. And please tell me how this belief of yours can be squared with ANY authentically Catholic social teaching.

Get down on your knees and thank God that your mother didn’t decide that killing you would be best for you. One-third of the children your age weren’t so fortunate.

Seriuosly - you feel that you can generalize and write ALL alums can’t afford to donate?? Although the economy is not in good shape at the moment, there are plenty of people who are not struggling and can definitely afford to donate to ND. Your statement about “saving face” is ridiculous. The alumni donations are a very big part of the university’s financial status - You can’t dismiss their feelings just because you disagree with their opinions and beliefs on this matter.

I think what has disturbed me even more is that while our President was abroad he told the world that “we are not a Christian Nation”. That statement alone speaks volumes as to what is wrong with our Country and why he should not be given an honory degree from our University.

Here’s what Obama said:
Still outraged?

Yes I am. When he says “we do not” and includes me in that statement i take offense.
This country was founded on Christian principles and will in my eyes always be a “Christian Nation”.

“Get down on your knees and thank God that your mother didn’t decide that killing you would be best for you. One-third of the children your age weren’t so fortunate.”

My mother’s pro-choice. She wanted me (and my younger sibling). She wasn’t forced into having either of us. Isn’t that great?

And I wouldn’t be here if my mother had had a headache that night or if any one of a million random things hadn’t occurred – she’d met a different guy at the dance she met my father at, or she’d had a headache that night, or whatever.

Gymmom, does that mean that Jews / Hindus / Buddhists / Muslims should be second-class citizens in any way? If not, then what does “being a Christian nation” mean? What should I, as a Jew, feel about living in a Christian nation? Am I just a guest or something?

So I guess that you, at least, are not one of the people arguing that Notre Dame is no longer a Catholic University.
