Elaboration: He grew up in Indonesia and was exposed to all different religions by his mother (taken from the interview with his sister this week in the NYT mag). But, he was Christian regardless of all the media about his background. I think they're calling him Muslim due to his father's background and the fact that many Africans are Muslim. But, the fact remains that he is Christian.

Obama actually belongs to a radical, left-wing Afrocentric Protestant church (to just say "he's a Christian" is not quite painting an accurate picture; his version of Christianity is well outside of the mainstream). They teach things like Jesus was a black man, the real Jews are black and the "white" Jews are just imposters, etc.

I suspect that Obama really doesn't go in for all of that on a personal level. He just goes to that church because that's the church he has always gone to.

His church is Trinity United Church of Christ (http://www.tucc.org/); go check it out. Remember that it's a church on the South Side of Chicago. It's no more radical than any other ethnic Christian church, IMO.

Fides - I thought the idea that Jesus was a black man was accepted. Could you provide a link to the "real jew...imposters" stuff, please?

"Fides - I thought the idea that Jesus was a black man was accepted."

Tolerated, perhaps.

I don't know about you, but I certainly don't conceive of Jesus of Nazareth as an African. Jesus was from Judea, the region nowadays called Israel and Palestine.
