Hey everyone,
I'm currently deciding between Oberlin and Carleton. I'm a prospective English major, and I spoke with an Oberlin student who said that while Oberlin's creative writing program is phenomenal, admittance is extremely competitive and difficult. Can anyone comment on this?

Also, any further, unrelated feedback on choosing between the two schools is definitely welcome.

Thanks!

Was the student you spoke to a CrWr major? The deal for the major is that you have to apply to upper level workshops. It means classes are high-energy and well-focused. If you work hard, and you’re a strong writer, you get into those classes. It’s a meritocracy.

That said, the department is PHENOMENAL. No doubt. All of the teachers are brilliant, kind and supportive. I’m a creative writing major-- I came to Oberlin for the program, and it hadn’t disappointed me. If you have any specific questions… I’m game.

Have you visited? The best way to get a hit on them is to check it out on the ground. If you can’t, I’d look at:

thanks! i’ll definitely check that out
