Anyone have any experience with Early Review at the Conservatory? I gather it is non-binding. Pros, cons?

It is non-binding; the Conservatory lets applicants know the results (admission, deferral, rejection) in December, and can include merit awards along with the acceptance. If the student likes Oberlin and is admitted, it can really simplify the application process. They usually have several weekend dates for early admissions.

Actually, the only weekend I know of for Oberlin Early Review is the first weekend in December as on Conservatory Admissions
Can you point us to an announcement of other dates, mamenyu? I know a couple of people who may be interested in other early review dates.

Pros: you get an answer (unless they decide to defer you to the regular admission pool) sometime in December, which allows you to blow off your safeties before their auditions if admitted or gives you time to add a safety or two if not. It helps spread out auditions so not all of them are January through March.

Cons: You may not be quite as ready to audition in December as you will be a couple of months later. Not all departments offer early review auditions.

It is indeed non-binding and you have until May 1 to respond to an acceptance.

BassDad -- you're right -- only one weekend; I was confusing the multiple audition weekends for regular admission. Sorry about the misinformation.

wait are there locations for the audition other than at the conservatory? Like would I have to travel all the way to Oberlin for the audition?

Depending on your instrument, there may be regional auditions. All of that information is on the Oberlin website.

laxman, a lot of the info can be gleaned from school websites. Please do your research. Folks here are happy to help, but won't do the stuff you should do yourself. :)

There's also a search function to view past threads. In the case of auditions, repetoire, dates, the info changes yearly and is school specific, so don't rely on old info.

But you could search for BU (your recent question) or look for posts by thumper1, fiddlefrog.

Might be helpful to review what's been said. Good background and might result in additional questions.

Just trying to help, not busting them off on you.

the thread on audition tips is a great resource and will answer many of this sort of question. The scheduling of auditions can be so very confusing. We were changing things last minute last winter.
