Oberlin ED - 2021

still waiting very anxiously here too!

@radioflyer Did your daughter visit and interview? What made her decide on Oberlin ED?

Pending her outcome at the highly appealing Oberlin, @LMC9902, this article may be worth reading through:

Thanks @merc81 - she does really like Hamilton and the open curriculum is appealing for sure. Still crossing our fingers that Thursday is a good day but I’ve prepared her that there are other great options!

@LMC9902 she did visit and interview, and fell in love with everything about Oberlin, feeling it was just a great fit for her in terms of her interests and the culture there. I have to agree, and hope she gets what she wants…is it thursday yet?

Wishing her luck on Thursday, @LMC9902. Oberlin – a school easy to recommend on multiple levels – appears to match your daughter perfectly.

Thanks @merc81! She submitted her application well before the ED due date so I think it has seemed even longer. @radioflyer I really wish it were Thursday already - just having an answer would at least give her some clarity! I assume there is no time of day they shared for when they plan to release, is there?

@LMC9902 no, they didn’t seem to want to do that…I feel the same way about just wanting the clarity. my D also applied well in advance of the deadline, so Thursday seems far away! Did she request a preview of financial/merit aid when she applied. We received one, and didn’t know whether or not to see it as a positive thing that they provided it.

@radioflyer we did the same and they came back with a merit estimate but who knows? My daughter just got back from play practice and told me she got an email from her admissions rep saying they are releasing Wednesday - hoping so!

thanks LMC9902! Weds is def better than thurs  had your daughter written to her admissions rep or did she get that message without asking for info?

@radioflyer She got an email from her. They have never met (my daughter visited when her counselor was away and interviewed with someone else) but actually have been emailing almost weekly since October and have become regular pen pals it seems. I do love how personal the process became but it will make things harder if she doesn’t get in because she has felt really connected!

Ahhh, I surely hope decisions come out tomorrow. I haven’t relieved an email- @LMC9902 , are you sure that’s for everyone?

@LMC9902 that’s lovely…my son had a similar relationship with his admissions officer at Hampshire, where he was accepted last week ED. My thinking was that it would be unlikely or ill advised for an admissions officer to be in such close contact with a student unless they were strongly in support of their application, don’t you think? So that bodes well for your daughter. Mine hasn’t heard much from hers :frowning: well, we’ll see…

@radioflyer now I’m anxious about the fact that I haven’t been in close contact with mine- Yikes!!

@walkbanx my D has not been in close contact with hers either. I’m sure you had a very strong application. Let’s keep breathing today! Hoping tomorrow is a great one for you.

Can any of you comment on the “vibe” of Oberlin? I applied ED because though I haven’t had the chance to visit, I just have that gut feeling. Everything matches up with me and Oberlin, but alot of students are telling me I could be 100% wrong without a visit to get a feel of the “vibe”. Can anyone demystify this vibe and maybe shed light on how it is at Oberlin? What’s the feel of the college? Thanks!

@Collegewhet Very supportive, fairly relaxed while still being academically rigorous. Very aware campus, students are passionate about music/art/social justice. Everyone that I spoke to was passionate about some subsect of these topics.

Seems to be the perfect middle ground of structure. Students take classes in a variety of subjects.

@collegewhet I haven’t visited…my daughter did…previously she had not been as excited about Oberlin, but she fell in love with it once there, and felt she had found the community she was looking for. She had previously visited Hampshire, Sarah Lawrence, Skidmore, Smith, Bard, Vassar, Wesleyan and UVM.

@Collegewhet I haven’t visited either because my daughter did their regional fly-in, in fact it was the only place we didn’t see together. She told me she just felt at home and that everyone there was “chill” which I read as open and accepting. I know she loved the classes she visited and the closeness of the town as well - I guess there is an art store with kittens that everyone loves to visit and for some reason that made her really happy (even though she’s allergic!). She had a great interview as well, though most of her interviews have gone well because she is someone who doesn’t get nervous or worry about impressing people.

I think the way walkbanx describes it sounds exactly right - supportive, fairly relaxed but still academically rigorous.

@walkbanx please do not worry about having a different path. My daughter just happened upon this one and for all I know she is bugging her rep too much! I don’t really think that’s the case but who knows, at least she knows how excited my daughter will be if she’s accepted. And I’m sure if her decision comes out tomorrow it won’t be just for her - it just so happens that she asked and that’s the answer she got. She didn’t get a time though so maybe they will email tonight saying a time they expect to release? I know she wants to be home when she reads it so I’m hoping it’s not early in the day!
