Oberlin Parents

They have sessions for parents and if you’ve never seen the campus it is fun to check it out. Most kids were with their parents when I went last year. I do encourage your kid to stay in a dorm overnight though rather than staying with you.

Thanks, Bayrunner!

We will be attending one of the sessions on Monday the 7th. My daughter is doing an overnight…I need to figure out where I should stay! We are really looking forward to it as we have never been to Oberlin (or Ohio!).

There are lots of nice hotels in Elyria and Elyria is not very far from the college. There’s also no shortage of hotels in North Olmstead.

We enjoyed the All Roads program but my d. was not able to do the overnight because of scheduling conflicts. She’d already been to campus a bunch of times though so it wasn’t really too much of an issue.

yes, it’s hard to nab a spot in one of the few B and B’s in Oberlin. The Oberlin Inn is scheduled to be torn down this spring as they are building an impressive new hotel and conference center as part of the Oberlin Project, a joint college and city imperative to make Oberlin self sustaining. The center should be completed by 2016 so will be there for you later on should your child decide on Oberlin. Elyria has several basic hotels that do the trick. About a 15 minute drive from campus.

Thanks for this site…my daughter will be attending in the fall. We’re from WA state, so appreciate the inside info to help us navigate this!

Yes – this is great! You have already solved the mystery of why the Oberlin Inn is no longer listed on the school’s “Where to Stay” page. D just found out she was accepted and we are planning to go back for All Roads… on 4/7. I am going to have to tote my 9-year-old twin boys along. Anyone have any suggestions on what to do with them after I drag them through the art museum? I know there’s that great candy store just off the quad. If the weather would just turn a corner this wouldn’t be an issue!

Anyone else’s student get invited to a local reception with an alum? (We are in the DC area.) The college is being so supportive as the kids make their decisions.

I think my daughter just got an email invite for a local reception – we are just outside of Seattle.

I will check out the “Where to Stay” page for a spot for me. We are coming in for the event on the 4/7 as well. We are visiting a few colleges that week - Oberlin is the first!

Shakespeare Fan- As far as activities for your sons: there is a movie theater in downtown Oberlin (The Apollo), a new ice cream shop (Cowhaus Creamery), and the Oberlin public library downtown is also a nice place for kids. Not sure if they’d be able to gain access to the gym, but there is a pool there and open basketball courts. The Ginko Gallery is an art store in town that usually has rescue kittens in the back that is a favorite for college students to come play with. The Art Museum is a must for all visitors, but please note that they are closed on Mondays! Hope this helps.

The Oberlin Inn is definitely still open this spring–it’s listed at the top of the page: http://new.oberlin.edu/visitor/accommodations.dot</a> .

There are also nice biking/hiking trails around Oberlin. I believe you can rent bikes in Wilder Hall. You can also check out the Oberlin Heritage Society and the various stops related to the Underground Railroad. Oberlin also has a lovely arboretum, and there is a Frank Lloyd Wright house there which is sometimes open for tours.

Hey, MiCharge…we’re going to the Seattle reception on the 16th!

Wow – thank you all for the suggestions! Kittens! Ice Cream! Bikes! We will surely find ways to occupy ourselves.

@shakespearefan, we are in the DC area as well and D received invite to the local reception. I think it’s on 4/9? I don’t know if we’ll be there. Oberlin is currently 3rd on my D’s list, and she needs to decide if she’s interested enough to attend. I hope she does. Best of luck to your daughter!

Thanks to all who have posted on this thread. Our D is thrilled to be accepted to the Oberlin Class of 2018. Tonight we are flrying back from the April 7 Admitted Students Day. It was a wonderful experience. I wanted to share a few details that might be helpful to others. Because of terrible weather related flight delays, our D was a solid hour late to meet her dorm host I used in flight internet to contact the Campus Visit Office by email, they wrote me right back, and asked us to contact the Overnight Visit Coordiinator by phone as soon as we landed. When we finally arrived, the dorm host, her other guest, the Overnight Visit Coordinator, and an Admissions staff member had all waited for us and were very warm and welcoming. I stayed at the Oberlin Inn and though the decor is definitely dated, the room I was in was sparkling clean with fast Internet so I was happy. Our D enjoyed her evening in the dorm. The Admnitted Students’ activities were all well planned and organized and I was very glad I went along. Our D was busy observing classes and doing her own thing but there were plenty of great tours and information sessions and I learned a lot. The experience was well worth the trip and our D has decided to attend Oberlin. I look forward to learning from parents with more Oberlin experience.

@shakespearefan - we are also in the DC area. Did your D happen to do the Folger Library fellowship program this year?

Hi new (and returning) Oberlin parents. My son just sent in his intent to enroll at Oberlin. He’s a dual degree student in viola performance and physics. We’re all very excited to be joining the Oberlin community!

Thanks so much for all of the comments and tips about Oberlin. It has really helped us plan our upcoming visit. We will be coming to Oberlin during the last admitted student event. My son is so excited and eager to go check it out. We have not been to Ohio before (we are from California) but he has fallen in love with the school from the website, admitted student forums, literature etc. He learned about Oberlin at the last minute from his college counselor at school. It seems to hit all of the things on his wishlist. I guess he will finally be able to decide in a week or so… In the meantime, I hope you all enjoy your kids last bit of their high school journey. They have worked hard and you should be so proud of them. I know am proud of my son. And remember that August and new adventures are right around the corner for them!

I’m working at getting plane reservations for some of the upcoming breaks. I noticed that the January term starts on Friday, Jan. 2 which I find really odd. That gives them just under 2 weeks for a break. I’m going to email the school but was wondering if anyone has any experience with Oberlin and can advise on the Jan. term and if missing that first day would present a problem? I can’t believe my D would be the only one.

It is nice to get these reservations done, as it can often be less expensive when done early. I do think it is strange that Winter Term would start on a Friday rather than a Monday and you should check that out. But, my reason for posting is that unless your daughter knows what she is doing for Winter Term and whether she is going to be on campus or off, you may want to wait to make those reservations.
