Oberlin RD 2021

@2021BKMom Oberlin is not going to have an interest in creating a financial award package in order to compete with Miami Oxford.

that’s what I figured - but hoping they might maybe pony up another $2K-$3K.

Do you have to submit the FAFSA to get merit aid if you applied for need-based but didn’t submit it?

@collegeunknown, no they consider students irrespective of need - my DD received a $23k John Frederick Scholarship without any need based request.

@Chembiodad thank you!

Has anyone gotten a package or official letter of admission in the mail?

rejected with 35 ACT, 3.9 GPA, multiple extracurricular leadership positions, and Oberlin has been my dream school since childhood. My heart was broken! I heard they dropped to an 11% acceptance rate this year though. Wish I could have seen it coming or would have applied ED (which was 30%)

@colleger111 yup! It came with a tshirt!

@outerspace9 I’m sorry to hear that. I’m surprised that Oberlin dropped to an 11% rate though - where did you hear that? I hope you have some other great options with stats like that - you will do great wherever you go!

@outerspace9, Great school that both of my twin DD’s are excited to have been accepted at, but where did you hear that the RD acceptance rate had dropped to 11% as that would be a significant change?

@colleger111 no package arrived in Houston either.

The acceptance rate seems awfully low.

DD2 was just noticed yesterday that she was awarded the John N. Stern Scholarship for Math and Sciences - very proud!

@Chembiodad, it sounds like your daughters are thinking about sciences and Oberlin. What’s your (or theirs) opinion on how strong the sciences are there? Is it comparable to the other schools they’re considering?

@ScienceInMA, while Oberlin has a robust Science program, we’re uncertain as to its relative strength as compared to some of her other acceptance choices, including Carleton and Hamilton - any insight from others regarding both of those programs would be appreciated. That’s separate from cultural fit which matters as well

My student graduated in 2015 with a double major in Neuroscience and Biology with a minor in Chemistry. From the second year they had research opportunities with professors. They obtained paid summer REUs (research experiences for undergraduates) after their second and third years and was accepted into multiple Neuroscience PhD programs after graduation. Their friends in the Neuro and Biology departments have had similar experiences.

I am sure the folks at Carleton and Hamilton will have similar stories. Academically, you can’t go wrong at any of these schools.

@steeplechase, agree, all are great schools - they are fortunate to have these choices

As a more objective measure, a remarkable 1 per cent of the members of the National Academy of Sciences are Oberlin alums–a record unmatched by any other comparable school. Here’s a news article about an event held last fall: http://news.oberlin.edu/articles/oberlins-1-percent-alumni-members-national-academy-sciences-return-campus/

@dave72, thx!
