I am currently a student at Oberlin College. While I do enjoy the academics, The college was feeling very small and claustrophobic at the end of my first semester of Sophomore year, so I decided I would send out a few transfer applications. I also was somehow unaware of the make up of the student body, when I decided to come here. I would like a more normal feeling environment, while still being academically rigorous. Additionally my major is film, and I have an interest in computer science. The film program at Oberlin focuses on theory and lacks an emphasis on production and technicality that I am interested in.
I was wondering what people think I should do. I applied to all of the listed schools and have only been accepted to Tulane so far. How strong is Tulane’s undergraduate liberal arts college?
I would like to live in a more vibrant and interesting place with more internship opportunities, and stronger film hopefully.
Also are there any other schools that anyone thinks I should apply to?
If cost is not an issue, UCLA and usc.
Congratulations on your acceptance to Tulane. Not an easy thing. Yes, the undergraduate program at Tulane is excellent, the student body is top-notch,and the city and campus are very vibrant. It is also very easy to double-major or create an interdisciplinary major. Best of luck to you!
Have you read the course descriptions for the film classes in Tulane’s catalogue? Have you run google searches for the course syllabi or reached out to any of the faculty members there to learn specifics?
Those steps would help you know if Tulane’s program is abetter fit for you.
Tulane has a new (newer) program Digital Media Production you should check out. My worry about Tulane - are there any faculty who have ever worked and made a living in film? They do have a summer film program that includes a week in Los Angeles, and films/TV shows are shot in NOLA, so there may be an opportunity to get involved. My daughter is considering a minor in this program.
Most film publications rank NYU and BU quite high for film. They maintain a presence in LA. Also, Wesleyan had a film prof who “made” the program but I think she is retiring (or has done so). Check out who took her place.
You’ve got great choices, congrats!
Wesleyan’s Jeanine Basinger show no signs of slowing down:

I think that if and when the day arrives when she does leave the teaching profession, she will leave behind some exceptionally attractive classroom, production and screening spaces made possible by a loyal and successful alumni base that is second to none.
NYU and Wesleyan seem to be the best fits for me. Lets hope I get in. Do you think getting in to Tisch as a freshman will help me at all. Also how much weight do they put on portfolio?
