i just read almost -every- post from the old discussion board....

all my life i'e worked my ass off in school taking the highest classes (got about 9 AP courses) and maintaining a 4.0... well... after reading so many threads, I've decided to apply ED to UVa instead of Cornell or Princeton.... the price is tons cheaper (even for an out of stater)...

I live in north florida, and I read that UVa is where Yale meets FSU (academically and socially, respectively)

my only problem is my SAT (i'm a junior) is a 1240 on my first shot... I am retaking in December and hoping for a 1350+

Is a 1350+ a good score to get in with? I think I have other distinguishing charactistics, such as developing my own companies etc... and being very involved with my school...

the forms go up in like 10 months for ED... i can't wait any longer...

uva james, I like your description "Yale meets FSU (academically and socially, respectively)". UVa is strange in that there are plenty of people w/ really high SATs who are rejected while people w/ lower SATs are admitted. UVa uses the SAT as a means of judging applicants' academic aptitudes, but will not use any number as a cut-off. The fact that you've taken the hardest classes and have maintained a 4.0 will definitely look good. Read the thread on writing good essays and make sure you convey your passion, commitment, and hard-work. Mention your companies.

In the end, UVa is looking for a student who will not only blossom and do well at Virginia, but will also contribute something to the school. Every application is read by at least 2 admissions officers. If you get deferred during the ED process and end up in the "maybe" pile during the RD process, the key is to get one of the admissions officers to fight for you. (The best ways of winning fans are writing really great essays and having amazing recommendations that show off your stellar characteristics.) For applications in the "maybe" pile, the entire admissions committee comes together and literally argues over each applicant. If someone believes in you and feels that you have something to offer UVa, that's half the battle. Hopefully, s/he will be able to sway the rest of the committee.

Globalist, are you Apocalypse on the archived CC boards?

Thanks for the input... I'll most likely be at this one forum for some time now and will try to post a resume once I indeed compile it this summer...

I'm definitely not planning on getting deferred and do think I have a clean shot, as long as my SAT increases to something reasonable... if it doesn't, I'll apply anyway and hope for the best.

After looking at some stats, I would guess that the SAT at UVa is ~1200-1400. (The US News composite isn't the real composite) As you can see, your SAT is already in the middle 50% and a 1350 would most likely put you above the average. Don't forget that the SAT is only one part of your app.

____SAT I VerbalSAT I Math

I have heard from other people, and from a tour at UVA, that for out of state applicants it is far more competitive and thus you need a higher SAT. When one father of an out of state applicant asked this question about the SAT's, the admissions dean tried not to say yes, and said there is no minumum, but she did say it is harder to get in out of state and that higher SAT's are definately a plus. I would imagine that the out of state applicants actually bring up the average. I'm in-state, and well above the average, so I hope that is true, b/c that would mean I would have an even better chance. If I were you I would definately shoot for 1400, for out of state you will need it. But remember that SAT's aren't everything. Good Luck.

yeah i know out of staters have a harder chance. i have some online contacts who have applied ED out of state... they'll tell me if they get in...

if I don't get into UVa, ill have to look at Princeton... although i was waiting for grad to get into an Ivy... i don't want to be driven into 400K worth of debt before grad. :p

I'm not trying to put UVA down (it is a really good school) with this, or you down, but if you can't get into UVA, you have almost no chance at getting into Princeton.

no it isn't. I've read many stories about kids being rejected from Princeton but getting into Yale or being rejected from Northwestern but getting into Cornell. This vBulletin is rampant with stories.

The admissions is a crap chute at best, especially when you have a competitive application.

You're right. I know people who didn't get into UVa and ended going to UPenn, Columbia, Cornell, and Stanford. That's why the essays are so important. It's the only thing you totally control. If your SATs and/or grades aren't so hot, your essays can make the argument that you deserve admission despite other factors.

Cornell came to my school last week. They, in fact, do place a prodigious amount of emphasis on the essay. The recruiter for Cornell stated an essay is the "last, best hope for admittance."

oh... it's also great to see a supportive alumni on this board. :D

does being a native hawaiian/pacific islander benifit in any way? i know being asian is a big disadvantage and other minoirity races other htan asian are all benifits
