My grandfather lives in LA but I am a NY native. If I ended up going to a UC, in particular UCLA and commuted from my grandfather's place, would I be eligible for in-state tuition?

If I remember correctly, the application asks how many years you've been living in your current CA home...that MIGHT be a factor. You should call the school and ask.

You are a resident where your parents pay their taxes. No, you are not a resident if you live with someone who lives in CA.

If you want to get residency, you have to marry a Californian or have kids in CA. It's the easiest way.

It's very difficult to attain residency. :( Go to http://www.registrar.ucla.edu and read the residency requirements. :( :( :(

I have a similar situation...I live on the east coast, but my dad lives in CA. I visited a few of the campuses this summer and asked an advisor about residency and they told me that I could get CA residency if my dad claimed me on his taxes (as a dependent of course) this upcoming year. After I sent in my application, I rechecked this info by emailing the registrar and they said that residency wouldnt be determined until after i was admitted (if i am admitted lol)..my dads gonna claim me on his taxes anyways but its still up in the air whether i'll get residencyy...

but yeah, CA residency is pretty strict compared to other states :(
