Hi, I will be attending OCC this fall as a freshman and I have already decided on the major of biology, as I would like to pursue in becoming a dentist. I am planning on transferring to UCI with the involvement in the TAG program.
My counselor has not been very helpful in my SEP (Student Education Plan) and I left the office still confused. They told me that I shouldn’t worry about the TAG program until next year (but I would like to get started on the transfer requirements ASAP), but instead to focus on my Gen. Ed. They didn’t inform me about IGETC and the transfer requirements in order to be enrolled at the UCI School of Biological Sciences which I found out by myself after doing my own research about what courses to take that will give me the advantages in transferring to my desired university.
The Biological Sciences requires:
-completed 60 semester units by the end of spring term
-one year of gen. chem. w/ lab
-one year of organic chem. w/lab
-one year of BIO SCIi 93 and 94 w/ lab
Mathematics to complete before enrolling at UCI:
-one semester of calculus and one semester of statistics (at least for my part because i plan on attending a health professional school in the future)
IGETC requires:
-eng. communication - 6 units
-math concepts - 3 units
-arts & humanities - 9 units
-social and behavioral sciences - 9 units
-physical and bio. sciences - 7-9 units
-foreign language - 0-5 units
Currently I am enrolled in:
Freshman Comp.
Intro to Stats.
Intro to Psych
Prep. for Gen. Chem Lab
I am looking to see if I can take the placement test for chem 180 in order to enroll for gen. chem w/ lab, if not it was suggested that i take prep. for gen. chem lab first then gen. chem. w/ lab next year.
I wish I was given the advise sooner to take english during the summer so that I will not have to worry about essays along with my other assignments in my classes. Such tips would’ve been very helpful, and I have taken it into account that I will take my next english level during the summer of 2019.
Although it is strongly suggested that students who want to transfer to a 4-year uni follow the IGETC, it was stated that IGETC should not be used for high-unit majors at UC campuses such as biological sciences (which is the major I want).
I was wondering what is the alternative I could take to pursue my major and if I am on the right track with my classes for transfer and if there are any tips and advices that you can share.
Thank you.
