Occidental vs. Pitzer

If you were to apply ED to one of the following schools which one would it be and why? Keep your answers in terms of academic advancement, prestige, best preparing you for grad school, and finally beauty of the campus.

Pitzer, indubitably. The Claremont Consortium allows you to take classes at Pomona, McKenna, Harvey Mudd, and Scripps. You can take advantage of the exceptional strengths of these institutions, their campuses, and their unique resources.

Thanks kwu, one for Pitzer! Anybody else?

oxy. i think its a better environment/more exciting place to be. the academics and what not are fantastic at both institutions. my friends said they love the way the freshman dorms are chosen too (by a freshman class of your choosing) so its a good way to meet people and bond.
i know quite a few people at the claremont colleges and they say that there really is a social order according to class rank & most put pitzer at the bottom (not to say its a bad school though cause it is good).

honestly i think you’ll get pretty similar levels of academic prestige and advancement at both institutions but it also depends on your intended major.

I don’t know if I want to major in either poly sci, or accounting.

I am also looking at CMC, my dream LAC, however, I am also trying to be realistic.

pitzer is more of the humanities isnt it? honestly for those two majors i would think cmc is the best option out of the 3 you mentioned

Obama went to Oxy, you gotta go there.

Okay lets put it this way which school, Oxy or Pitzer, is harder to get into?

Occidental is more difficult to get into.

Occidental
SAT CR: 590-690
SAT M: 590-680
SAT W: 590-690
ACT: 27-31

Top 5%: 37%
Top 10%: 65%
Top 20%: 87%
Top 25%: 91%

ED admit rate: 43.9% (50/114)

Pitzer
SAT CR: 580-690
SAT M: 580-680
ACT: 24.5-30

Top 10%: 51%
Top 25%: 80%

ED admit rate: 42.9% (57/133)

However, for the Class of '12…

Pitzer overall admit rate: 22.3% (899/4031) [this year’s class of '13 admit rate was 20-21%]
vs
Occidental overall admit rate: 39% (???/5790)

The overall admit rates are useless if the OP plans to apply ED.

As for the test scores, I used the IPEDS data, which comes directly from Occidental. It may be a year old, but it’s probably still valid.

Pitzer…cuz i like it there
and they have cute graduation robes…haha

If your true #1 is Claremont McKenna, then Pitzer is a better option. Just check to see how many classes you may take at CMC while earning your degree at Pitzer.

Currently Pitzer is both harder to get into and has higher testing students than Oxy. It is true that there is a pecking order among the five Claremont Consortium colleges … it’s simply an American (and probably almost universal) trait to rank relative performance and then assign more importance to those ranked higher.

So just hang out with the CMC folks if that makes you feel more prestigious. Better yet, forget about heirarchy, pecking order, and all that BS and just have a good time and accept your own strength/weaknesses and make the most of your opportunities.

i would go for pitzer.

Alright thanks guys, I think I will apply ED at either Pitzer or CMC. Worst case scenario is I get accepted to Pitzer, which isn’t all that bad, and I get to take some classes at CMC.

Let me ask one more question I heard both Pitzer and Oxy are very liberal. Which one do you think is more liberal? And what is CMC’s ED admission stats?

If you are so keen on CMC, why don’t you apply there instead? It doesn’t make any sense to apply to a school you don’t want to go to. While the consortium is flexible, you still have to follow that school’s curriculum and live on that campus. Plus, ED should be for a school you are 100% excited about. My advice would be for you to visit all three schools and figure out which one you like best. Or at least start talking to their admission reps.

I don’t see an awful lot of difference in the admitted student statistics of either school, but because of the 5C consortium, I would choose Pitzer.

again, keep in mind that each school in the Consortium is very different. Pitzer is certainly more laid-back with a focus on social activism. CMC is a bit more intense with a strong leadership focus. An easy way to think about the two schools is that CMC students want to run the world, Pitzer students want to fix the world.

If I were to apply ED at CMC and my gpa is around 3.7-3.8, unweighted, what should my ACT score be if I wanted to have a decent shot at getting accepted?
