Oct 2011 SAT writing question

This is question 19

Large than the entire state of California, the Chihuahuan Desert is home to (approximately) 1,000 plant species found nowhere else in the world.

The answer is no error.

But I have trouble with approximately (adv), I thought it modify plants species, which is a noun, so it should be approximate.

Am I missing something?

“Approximately” modifies the linking verb in “desert is home to”, not “plant species”. Therefore, it should be an adverb.

Correct me if I’m wrong.

I think it modifies 1000.
Hope that i we can discuss it. :D

Yeh, I forgot about this:
“Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs.”

So, 1000 is an adjective, and “approximately” is modifying it.
