But it didn’t ask about the whole passage in general. If it did, you would be right. It asked particularly about the last sentence. That last sentence (esp. if you looked at the sentence before it) implied that the texts/ceremonies were very important in many Native Americans’ lives.

The last sentence said something to the effect of, “And it is unlikely they would forget at a ceremony.” It clearly implied that the ceremonies were important. IMO, that was a trick question. And notice how it was the last question on the short passages. When the QAS comes out, I’m willing to bet that it will be rated as a “5” for difficulty.

Idk if it has been asked yet, but what did everybody else for that CR question about Gogol It had like “temporary digression” and “shift in the narrative”

When it comes to the Indian ceremony question for the last sentence, the key is CONTEXT. You approach those questions using CONTEXT. Even though it’s the last sentence, and even though it says ‘what does the author best mean in the last sentence’, you don’t disregard the entire rest of the passage and pretend it doesn’t exist. For that reason I went with ‘as an aid to memorization’ as opposed to ‘ceremonies being important’. Yes, ceremonies were important, AND SO for that reason exactly Indians wouldn’t have their great memory fail them during such ceremonies, which was where context and the rest of the passage come in. That is why the author included it, not to emphasize the importance of the ceremonies just for the sake of saying it, but to make a point regarding memorization.

So yes, it was a trick question, and if you put ‘ceremonies being important’ I think you got tricked, because you took what it said literally, without situating it in the larger scheme and presentation of the passage.

ok i just read through 45 pages of forums and my eyes hurt. here is what i will say:

THE QUESTION ABOUT THE IMAGES WAS “IMMEDIATELY UNDERSTANDABLE.” THIS WAS DIRECTLY STATED IN THE PASSAGE, THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO AMBIGUITY HERE. THE IMAGES WERE NOT ENHANCED IN ANY WAY. THEY WERE SIMPLY MADE FLAT. THE DEFINITION OF ENHANCE: “To make greater, as in value, beauty, or effectiveness; augment.” THIS DID NOT OCCUR AT ALL TO THE IMAGES.

THE QUESTION ABOUT MOCKING VS JEERING, IN MY OPINION, IS EXTREMELY TRICKY AND CAN GO BOTH WAYS. THE AUTHOR IS JEERING (OR BEING DERISIVE) AT THE GUY’S DISCOVERY OF GIOTTO WHEN HE WAS TENDING TO SHEEP. HE IS ALSO MOCKING BIOGRAPHIES AT THE SAME TIME. BUT WAS IT ACTUALLY A BIOGRAPHY?

ALSO, THE QUESTION ABOUT “THIS BOY IS GREATER THAN I” IS WITHOUT A SHADOW OF A DOUBT “ADMIRATION.” THE QUESTION IS REFERRING TO MICHAELANGELO’S MASTER’S SPECIFIC STATEMENT, NOT THE PASSAGE AS A WHOLE. READ THE QUESTIONS, PEOPLE. IT’S NOT THAT HARD.

AND THE AUTHOR’S ATTITUDE IS CLEARLY “WRY”

FOR THE PARENT’S FRIEND’S DAUGHTER’S THING, I PUT “CRITICIZE A BEHAVIOR.” I WAS EXTREMELY PUZZLED BY THIS QUESTION.

Anyone want to take the time to update the list…

I put “explaining an action” for the parent one because it was right after the parents were confused about the daughters decisions.

I also put admired, wry, and mocking.

I think I put mezmerized or something similar for “imediately understandable” one, I thought that answer was too obvious so I didn’t pick it. -headdesk-

I got a 700 on my last CR w/o studying so I guess I can’t be that bad…
