October 2010 ACT Science Thread

I didn’t think the science was too bad this time, but the only other time I took the ACT was in December.
We apparently had two crows on the roof of our room fighting though…they had to have us stop and searched because they couldn’t find the source of the noise XD

I thought the gene one was hard and the one with the periodic table was just impossible. The car one and the plant one, however, I thought were really easy. I didn’t even get to read the last question, had to just put C.

What the hell was that??
I thought you didn’t really need any “prior” knowledge to do well on the science section. The answers are usually always somewhere in the table/graph/explanation, but I sure as hell had NO idea what to do for that gene one. I had Biology in 9th grade - how am I supposed to remember something that specific now, four years later?

did anyone remember a question that talked about atomic radius and it dealt with asking about ions or whatever? any one remember? did u guys say that a negative ion meant larger radius? i really didnt read the table for this one, i just figured that negative ion meant more electrons and more elctrons meant larger radius??? make sense haha?

yeah Eagles, if you looked at the chart, negative ions = bigger, positive ions = smaller

yes!

btw 400th post! ftw

^ ah well I now know I at least got one right lol

oh and for the high terrace grazing question did u guys say that the grazed terrace as less resistant to erosion? because it had a higher erosion rate. it was the last question of the passage.

less vegetation, so more erosion

do u remember if it was A or B??

no i dont, sorry

all i remember was that i putt the answer saying less erosion, and it was either A or B? anyone here remember?

less vegetation, so less resistance to erosions was the answer right? I think it D or the last one.

i thought gazing meant more vegetation, so i think i putt more vegetation, less erosion

I thought it was hard! The Science section is mostly reading comprehension. Usually just scanning the reading and underlining italicized words, numbers, and anything in parentheses works well. I had a hard time with this one though, and I didn’t finish. :(

Wait. Dumb question. Was there a fighting scientists section? My review book swore there’d be a fighting scientists section but I don’t remember one…

It was more vegetation, less resistance to erosion (since erosion rate was the highest)

What were all of the passages? I’m trying to remember

Genes- rooster combs(5)
Terrace grazing (6)
Periodic Table- BP, MP, etc (6)
Cars- XYZ (6)
Plants- Light/Dark (7)

this was a harder than normal science section…

and the best part is that they’re probably not gonna have a huge curve…-___-

@amyyy, you’re thinking of the conflicting viewpoints question-- it was the first one with three hypotheses.

there was no fighting scientists passage…there wasn’t one on the september act either
