October 2010 CR SAT Thread

Also, i kinda remember another question from the film critic one-- i think it was “true” most nearly means “genuine” … ?

for the personal anecdote, i got that it introduced the author’s ideas about writing.
Other than that I agree with the list.

What was the answer to the question about tone? It was in the last lines of the passage.
I remember I put triumphant.

Then what were the answer choices for the oscar wilde one then?

I can’t believe I (probably) made that mistake on the two passages.
I want to bang my head on a wall right now. Hahaha.
I was soo hoping for a 780-800 on CR, which would make up for my below 700 math score.
& that means I got at least 2 wrong.
Once again does anyone know how the curve goes?

For the question with the three people and the author… Was the answer “She was not unique”?

@Kk415kk: Actually, I agree entirely with what you said about the personal anecdote. I was about to put “insight,” but if I remember correctly, the complete answer choice was actually “insight into the author’s character.” (And therefore incorrect, since it offers insight into Kael’s character). I marked the “opening into a reflection on writing” choice. It does serve as a segway into the author’s discussion on writing, on substance v. style, on how one’s opinions form gradually, etc. The author used the “I think only with a pencil in my hand” quote to transition into his discussion.

@Quomodo: I put resolute. The sentences were simple and straightforward, especially with the italics. The author was firm in his views on writing.

Here’s a link to data from past tests http://www.erikthered.com/tutor/SAT-Released-Test-Curves.pdf

The average is:
-1 800
-2 800
-3 790
-4 770
-5 760
-6 740
-7 730
-8 720
-9 700

What were choices and sentence for “elephants…thriving”?

What was the answer to the question about tone? It was in the last lines of the passage.
I remember I put triumphant.

^ I can’t remember quite what the word was, but I put something close to “assertive”. Because they were saying “Writing is critiquing.” Or something to that extent, anyway it was very assertive, lmao.

Also, i kinda remember another question from the film critic one-- i think it was “true” most nearly means “genuine” … ?
^ I second that.

Then what were the answer choices for the oscar wilde one then?
^There was one about a stunningly (or something) written poem, a picture depicting a scene from history, the beautifully written biography with factual errors, something, something…(both obviously wrong).

I also put triumphant for the tone.

And for the emphatic one, passage 1 was emphatic because it clearly took a side on whether PBS should be funded by taxes or whatever. Passage 2 (for the people who thought that the question was about passage 2) was balanced because it did not take a clear side.

Nobody knows how the curve goes until scores are released.

I can’t believe we’re all so divided over emphatic and balanced…is it possible that CB just printed 2 versions of the question? It’s tough for the CC community to be completely split and yet completely confident in whether they thought it said Passage 1/Passage 2.

Oh yeah. Triumphant vs. resolute. Let the battle begin! I put resolute.

I believe this was the answer

I put resolute but wasn’t sure.

For the SC was unremitted an answer?

Harambee—that’s a pretty harsh CR curve for it to be average. I don’t think it applies to the CR of this SAT

Why is this one correct?
-probably did occur because there was no evidence against it

^I put probably did not occur because there is little literature documenting it or something to that effect.

Also, did anyone get AAA __ AAA for the answers? Or something like that for the once with mmovies?

(it went 3 of the same, something else, then 3 more same letters)

I think there were 2 questions, one relating to P1 and the other P2. This might be the source of confusion for CC’ers. We’ve been arguing about two different questions.

there is no battle. Resolute is obvious.

i got -7 on this January’s SAT and ended up with a 680 in reading -___-
