***OCTOBER 2015 ACT DISCUSSION THREAD***

Ended up lowering my composite from a 31 to a 30  but my science improved from 28 to 31 and math went up from 28 to 29. My new super score is 32! Time to bust butt on studying for this December ACT.

Have my composite but no writing yet. Will colleges with the Nov 1 deadline be ok with this?? I have already ordered my score reports to be sent but can’t send until I get the writing!

Ahhhhhhhh

I got 29 on my ACT, which is 4 point improved from my previous ACT scores.Should I delete my previous ACT scores??

Just got my scores today:

36 English
30 Math
34 Reading
32 Science
33 Composite

I’m feeling okay about my 33, but I’m hoping to raise it to at least a 34.
Anyone have suggestions on how to improve my math score? I already have the red book and used it to do some light preparation, but found the math questions (and the practice tests in general) to be far less difficult than those which appear on the actual test.

Just remembered that the scores were due (didn’t get an email or anything) and logged in, look it up and there they were. I got a 33 on my first ever try of the ACT (E32, M34, R32, S33 = C33). Things I’m currently thinking about:

  • I signed up on the ACT on the registration deadline (which I believe was Sept 18th) and started learning for the first time in 4 weeks (I'm from the UK and just decided to give it a go, thinking if I get a good enough score I'll think about applying to some US universities as a transfer student)
  • I ran out of time on the test on pretty much every section, and know for a fact I guessed some bubbles on the end of some of them (several for reading and science, and one or two for english) and yet I got a pretty decent score.
  • I would have been very happy with a 34, as I believe that would put me in the top 75% of most applicants rather than between top 50% and 75%, and I read on prepscholar that 34 is a sort of benchmark, meaning there's not much difference between 34 and 36 when applying to top unis, but considering how everything went on the day I'll take a 33 :P (If I do apply it will be to Brown, Princeton, Yale and Harvard for sure, and maybe more)
  • I did the writing too, but completely screwed it up so I expect the score will be total garbage, (I had run out of steam + didn't like the prompt + didn't prepare for it enough, like I said, only had 4 weeks to learn from scratch).

Now i’m in the situation where I’ve signed up for the December test, but I only have two practice tests left (the ones I bought for $25 from the act website). How am I going to get better if I don’t have fresh new exams to work on? I’ve already done all the ones on prep scholar and all the ones in the red book…does anyone have any suggestions?

@akalei to move your Math score use recently released tests from 2014 and 2015.

Time yourself and review what you get wrong. That is the key.

If you have trouble figuring out your math mistakes, try the videos at ACT Quantum.

@HopingYale Nope. If I were you, I would focus on extracurriculars and schoolwork. A 35 is more than sufficient for most competitive schools. It’s not really worth the time studying extensively just for that one extra point.

@HereToHelpYou Thanks for replying! I’ll definitely be doing that. I’ve got my fingers crossed for the December test!

If my writing score hasn’t come out yet is there any pattern to when they’re being posted?

^
would like to know that as well.

hey guys… say if i have a 36 composite score but only 20 in essay… should i still send this to schools like Upenn?

Laughs because I still haven’t received my scores due to some kind of error on ACT’s part. Looks like I’ll be waiting for at least another two weeks.

35 C
35 E
35 M
36 R
35 S
ticked off because I know exactly which question I missed on science. Waiting on writing

@ffina23 got my writing score this morning

Is a 24 on writing good? I’ve been trying to figure out how it correlates and whether i should send it in

@HuskieFan2 Same!! I got a 35 composite and 35 English but a 19 on my essay and I was shocked. In Sept. I got a 35 on English and a 24 on writing so I really don’t understand what is happening. Also, the average essay score in Sept was a 17 which is 3 points below the average of all the other sections…

My kid has still not received any of his scores and i wrote ACT this morning…no word back yet…its truly odd.

Same here!! Still says registerd :frowning:

My son’s writing score was available this morning. There was no email notice, it just showed up.
