okay anybody know of which company makes the most accurate practice tests?
@wanderlustgal Have you used the College Board Blue Book practice tests already? Those are by far the most accurate when it comes to the real SAT. The College Board website also has SAT practice questions and an online SAT full-length practice test.
@kmcfadden99 the sat online course offers a few tests I heard
Rising Junior here trying to be done with the SAT before the 2016 rolls around… I’ve been traveling virtually the entire summer and just got home yesterday, so I really need to crack down on this test. October 3 will be my first official SAT Test. My goal is to score a 2250 or higher.
Currently, I’m getting 0-2 questions wrong on Writing per TEST. (I VOUCH FOR ERICA MELTZER, AMAZING RESOURCE!)
On Math, I usually get 4-6 questions wrong per TEST, and they are virtually ALL silly errors (besides certain absolute value ones, sometimes they stump me). I haven’t done much prep besides reading through the Blue Book’s “teaching” math section and a bunch of practice sections (where I go over why I got certain things wrong)
Reading is where I need some help. I usually get 1 vocab question wrong per SECTION, totaling to 3 per test. I haven’t done much (if any) studying of SAT vocabulary… should I go through the effort of knowing everything on Direct Hits and memorizing PR’s 1000 word list? It seems like the costs outweigh the benefits… but I’m going for at least a 750, and right now I’m hovering at high 600s. I usually get 2-4 questions wrong in passages, specifically the long comparison passages. Anyone have any tips for that type of passage specifically?
Thanks for reading my disorganized rant! Good luck to all
Im also a rising junior (I’ve been only self prepping all summer)
I just wanted to know everyone’s tips on CR passage reading
Especially: Do you guys prefer to read the passage then the questions? Or vice versa?
How to not be indecisive ( and not reread the 2 choices you are considering or a long period of time)
For writing
How do you guys identify sentence mistakes? I often miss them and have to reread (again, wasting time)
Hi everyone! Can someone please give tips on how to raise an 8 essay to a 10? thanks.
@LucidGman
Hi, can you explain more for “erica meltzer”?
Can you link me to her resources?
Hey everyone! I’m a rising junior, taking this SAT in order to avoid taking the new SAT, like some other people who have commented above. Currently, my highest single score is a 2250, which I honestly thought was a fluke. More likely, I’m around a 2150 (800 Math 650 CR 700 W). Any tips to get the essay up, and to learn grammar more effectively? How about CR? Thanks everyone!

Hey, pretty new to college confidential threads and forums but i guess I’ll be using it pretty often in the next 4 months. Im a rising senior in canada (not sure why this thread is limited to america), but regardless ill be taking the sat in october. Ive taken it once before and got a 1800 but after buying just about every prep book you could imagine my scores are something like 750-800 m 700-800 w 670-730 r
I think this link should help everyone. Here there are legit psats/sats all in one place so if you want to see how youd do empirically try the real thing ! http://blog.prepscholar.com/complete-official-sat-practice-tests-free-links
Hi,
Before summer started, i took the March SAT and got a 2150 (740 Math, 720 Writing, 10 essay, 690 Reading). My goal is 2300+ on the upcoming October 2015 SAT. In June, I used the blue book by CB and i kept getting high 2200’s on my SAT. However, recently, my scores have been going down and I’ve only been averaging 650 on each section. I am also running out of tests from the blue book so i have a couple questions:
-
What are some tactics I should look into to help me improve my score??? I don’t know why but I am missing like 5+ questions on each section and I don’t know why? My goal is for 800 Math, 750+ writing and 750+ reading.
-
Which prep book will help me better improve my score??? Mainly, in math, i make careless mistakes regarding addition or I miss questions about surface area/volume of 3D objects. My main problem is CR passages and analyzing author’s tone and meaning of the passage.
-
Are there any other tips you guys suggest for helping me break the 2300 barrier?
Thanks,
SD
@LucidGman
Can I please have some of those math skills? The math is where I suffer most, and it’s where I’m heavily studying. Practice makes perfect, but sometimes I feel like I’m banging my head on a brick wall. Indefinitely. I know it’s only basic skills in weird ways, but sometimes I just can’t figure out those questions.
CR is definitely my strongest point - I’ve been an extremely avid reader for a very long time, so there’s only one or two vocab words I haven’t known, but I’m usually able to cross out most (or more commonly, all) of the other answer choices. I have an average of getting 1-2 Q’s per section wrong on the passage based parts, but those are mostly silly mistakes where I haven’t been paying close attention to detail. A tip: the right answer is usually a restatement of something already said in the passage. Since the test is standardized, it has to be. Same thing goes for “inference” questions - you can’t read into what it’s saying because two people could have valid arguments for their completely different answer choices. It has to be standardized, so just because it seems correct doesn’t actually make it correct from the College Board’s standpoint.
Writing is half easy/hard. The sentence correction is easy stuff (mostly), but the essay kills me every. single. time. I think too much at the begginning, and run out of time near the end. Any suggestions on how to deal with this problem? Some might say “just start writing”, but I have to have an idea/outline of what I’m saying first, or else I meander around and am not very articulate.
@Querielicious
I don’t have much advice to give about math, besides a few things. First, I am now getting 0-2 wrong on Math sections, and the ones I do get wrong are virtually always careless errors. I would take real college board math sections, then go over ANY problem that took you longer than a minute and a half to solve, and find a quick way to solve it. If you didn’t know the content, jot it down and work in a prep book for that section. This worked for me. Also, once you’re finished answering a question, look at your answer and what the question asks for, and make sure you’re answering the actual question.
Thank you for the CR tips. I have implemented tips similar to yours on passage-based reading, but I still make a few inferences that I don’t catch myself on. I’m working on telling myself after answering every question “Where is there support for this answer in the passage?” Also, I have been slacking on vocab. Of the 9 errors I made last test, 5 of them were attributed to vocabulary.
I agree with you in that the sentence correction portion of the Writing section is easier than the essay. I’m still working on the essay myself. I think one literary example and one personal example should suffice if I fill the two pages with meaningful content. People say that personal examples aren’t as good as historical ones, but step back and remember that this is a STANDARDIZED test. Much like the SAT doesn’t test Calculus because most some kids haven’t taken it yet/don’t have the opportunity to take it in their high schools, the SAT can’t expect every kid to know about historical events in detail because kids from high schools in poverty-stricken areas may have covered much less history than an elite private school. Therefore, they cannot count a personal example as “less” than a historical or literary one. That’s just my reasoning, maybe I’m wrong. Good luck!
@LucidGman : You are absolutely right. They can’t penalize for not knowing historical information vs. Personal examples. In fact, they can’t even penalize for wrong information. You can say that Ronald Reagan won World War II while riding on a unicorn, and they can’t penalize you for it if it proves your point. (An extreme example, but you get the point. )
is it possible raise my score from low 1900s to 2200+? my breakdown on the last SAT was 730 writing 640 cr 570 math essay 10. any tips would be appreciated! and yes i know, i am bad at math
3…weeks…the day I took my first practice test felt like yesterday…
Just registered. Last time I got 2110 (690 CR, 740 M, 680 W). I’m hoping for 2220 on this next one (700CR, 800M, 720 W). If they superscored PSAT with SAT I’d have a 2250 :(.
What vocab books are you guys using??
Is Barron 3500 a decent one? I’ve been using that
Hi guys! I am an international student, so it may be wrong for me to post here. But you are more cognizant of sat strategies than your intl peers. Well, i need advice: how can i finish cr sections about 5-7 minutes earlier? Thanks in advance!
@uzbekboy I try to fly through the vocab and come back if I don’t know the answer. Then, putting lines between paragraphs in the passage where there are major transitions helps me not spend much time having to refer to the passage.
