October Break?

I was just looking over the academic calendar for ND and it appears that there is a week break in October (17th - 25th). What do students from out of state usually do? I was planning on flying my D home for Thanksgiving and Christmas, but I wasn't thinking about another plane ticket for October.

My s will come home to CT for that break. Thank goodness for credit card airline miles- and since it’s not a high travel time, it only “cost” half the usual miles compared to holiday travel.

Most people do leave campus–as most on-campus dining is very limited. Our student has always come home and it was esp a welcome break as a freshman. It provided an op to rest up and then continue with the semester–freshman year can be somewhat of an adjustment. But, I am sure not everyone leaves campus…

I noticed that there are home football games at the beginning and end of fall break. Do most of the kids wait to leave until after the Oct. 17th USC football game and come back before the Oct. 24th BC football game? I can’t imagine the campus being empty during 2 home football games?

I’ve gone home for every October break so far, as most students do. Some students stay, but dining options are limited and there won’t be a lot going on on campus (between football games). But since there are 2 football games this year, I think I’m staying on campus. I think there will be more students around than usual because of that, though some might go home in between the games and a few might skip one or both of the games. Another option for October break is to do a service learning project through the center for social concerns (usually in Appalachia) for credit.

i had planned on staying on campus, because my family and I don’t think it is worth the extra plane ticket, and both USC and BC are supposed to be really good football games this year.

when you say that the dining is limited, what do you mean exactly. It is just the amount of types of food or is the times further restricted?

In past years, only 1 dining hall has been opened with very limited operational hours. Other on-campus facilities (Subway, Burger King, Starbucks) have usually shut down completely. But, this year may be different–in the past couple of years, there have not been home football games or it has only been one of the games on one of the weekends. A lot of people do go home–

My d came home in Oct last year (as a freshman) but says with back to back home football games, she is definitely staying there this year. She indicates that many in her dorm will do the same. It might be a good time to visit her.
On the subject on staying up there, we did not offer her an expensive ticket home for Easter since it was app. 3 wks after spring break and I thought maybe she would work on one of her term papers (wrong, she went to Chicago).

this year’s percentage of people staying on campus will be a lot higher with both USC and BC coming to South Bend

You could do an Appalachia Semniar. It’s a week long service thing in the Appalachia area. A lot of students do it. It’s a fun productive way to spend a break, have some fun, and help others. I’m going to do one in the fall. Fall Break is boring to go home too. None of my other friends were out.

if you stay on campus can u stay in your dorm or where?

You stay in your own room. I’ve always wanted to stay for a break, I think it would be a lot of fun, so I think this year might be it.
