Are there any downsides to taking the LSAT for the first time during the October of your senior year (besides possibly not being able to take them twice)? I was planning on taking them in June, but I feel like I'd have a lot of time to study over the summer if I took them in October. Would my law school applications be delayed significantly if I took them the first week in October?

I do not see any harm in taking the LSAT in October. Unless you intend to apply early decision, it is not a "delay" by any means. If you want to retake, there is always the December offering. Without saying, if you do take it again in December you will be at a disadvantage because most people would already have their applications in.

If you take the Oct LSAT, you'll want to have already done a fair bit of research re: where you want to apply so that you're ready to roll when your scores come in. If you don't already have an LSAT score in hand, make sure to cast your research net very widely just in case your actual score catches you off guard. You don't want to have to scramble come late October (sort of what happened to me, and it all worked out just fine, but did result in a lot of unnecessary stress, application fees, confusion, + delay).

As long as you know that going in + act accordingly, I'd say you're fine.
