***October SAT 2016 (US Only) Thread ****

I got a 1550 (790 reading, 760 math). Is it worth retaking if I’m interested in schools like Carnegie Mellon SCS, or is this ok?

“My daughter got one wrong on math and got 790 and got 4 wrong on reading and 1 wrong on writing and got a 760.”

Interesting. My D got 0 wrong on reading and 3 wrong on writing and also got a 760.

So that would seem to indicate that one missed writing is equivalent to two missed reading - not sure what the rhyme or reason is with that but guess College Board gets to come up with whatever algorithm they want for figuring out scores.

I got 770 in Math 2 and 760 in Chemistry today

Any advice if these are good scores to present to top schools ? thanks

Yikes. My D with a 35 ACT just got her first SAT back. She only got a 1380. She thought she was done with testing, but now we don’t even know if (and I doubt) it will be a high enough “confirming” score to move her from NMSF to Finalist. Perfect score on essay. And she felt so good about this test too. Anyone else who felt they did better than they actually did? Now to decide if it is worth it to retake or not. She would have to for her reach schools. Or she may just take the full tuition scholarship she has already been offered at some instate schools. I think the app process has burned her out and I don’t know what she will decide–to retake or not. She can’t submit her 35 ACT to her reach schools since she took that without the writing since her in states didn’t require it. She may have shot herself in the foot. :frowning:

@slaudsmom
My D is in a similar situation: 34 ACT but 1400 SAT. Some kids just seem wired for one or the other.

Is it an option for your D to take the ACT again, with writing? Hopefully she could replicate that 35.

Is your D NMSF? The 1380 will probably be okay as a confirming score. There is some discussion about this on the National Merit board here. Apparently the confirming SAT score will be a selection index, like for the PSAT, and it will be no higher than 209, which is the commended score.

770 for 2 wrong on math
720 for 8 wrong on reading/writing (four each) :frowning:

This is a weird polarization of my practice scores, which were more like 720 math/770 reading/writing o.0

@BucketsUCSC he missed 2 on the reading section for a 790 and none wrong on the other sections

Oops, make that 9 wrong on reading/writing - six of which are command of evidence questions!
I guess now I know what I have to study.

3 wrong on Reading, 0 wrong on Writing/Language = 780
10 wrong on Math = 680

Here’s what I have been able to piece together for the math scale:

58 - 800
57 - 790
56 - 770
55 - 760
54 - 740
53 - 720
52 - 710
51 - 700
50
49
48 - 680
47 - 670
46
45
44
43 - 630

@tgr131 DD has 53 correct in Math and got 730

My child got a 710 with 8 wrong on reading and 3 wrong on writing/Lang

The College Board has decided to enforce a brutal scale for the English/Writing section of the SAT. They did this for previous new SATs this year and for the PSAT. 1 mistake costs you 10-20 points on the total Reading/English. So kids, pay close attention to the English section!

Not a huge improvement on reading or math since June for SAT…

Reading - 32 (12 wrong)
Writing - 36 (4 wrong)
Math - 33.5 (11 wrong)

EBRW: 680
Math: 670

Composite: 1350

Wow my scores are almost perfect… except for my Evidence-Based Reading and Writing Score. :((

Total: 1470
Math: 790
Evidence-Based Reading and Writing Score: 680 X_X
Essay: 8 ®, 7 (A), 8 (W)

One more chance next week to fix my Reading and Writing Scores for MIT and other schools to see. I can do it!

Overall Major Improvement from my May SAT

Overall: 1500
EBRW: 770
Math: 730

English: 40 (-0)
Writing: 37 (-2)
Math: 36.5 (-5)

Essay: 7 ® 6 (a) 6 (w)

Still not really comparable to my old SAT score (2220) but it’s still good. Got my SAT 2 on the 5th and then I’m done

@GMKoon Same feeling… I went from 1310 (610 V, 700 M) to a 1350 (610 V, 740 M)… like I got less wrong on English and my score stayed the same. And for Math like for real… last test I got -9 and got 700… this time i got -4 and 740. ugh

Well, my ACT is definitely better, but not as drastically higher as other posters’…
@OMPursuit we got really similar score breakdowns! 2 wrong math for a 770 (like expected, harsh curve), 7 wrong in Reading and 1 Writing for a 740. Looks like writing definitely has more weight; 20 point difference with only a 1 R/W difference.

Definitely would retake if I didn’t have a good ACT already. I might submit to some schools next year (as my math score on the SAT is slightly higher than my ACT math, R/W much worse) but who knows. I hope I get this score on the PSAT :))

Essay: 6, 6, 6 …I thought this essay was decent! My style was a little bit risky though and may have hurt me…I included so much evidence but ig CB doesn’t like my more expressive style…I wonder if this 18/24 is better than a 28/36 on the ACT. Wow. I guess I just have sucky luck with essays!

Good job to everyone who survived the October test and also the wait to get scores

@YoohooAddict Idk bruh… Last time I got 1310 too but with 630 and 680. It must be their curves or whatever.

Time to study for the December ACT/SAT -_-
