October SAT Essay Topics?

I always thought that each SAT Testing date had four essay prompts.......

However, it seems like the October test only had one.....

Everybody who I asked had the exact same prompt as me. It's not like I only asked people from my area.......because after the test.......I went to a key club board meeting.........everyone there arrived after taking the SAT.....all of these people are from different parts of New Jersey........yet.........they all had the same essay topic as me...............It can't be a coincidence that 16 ppl from different parts of the state got the same essay prompt....

I don't know anyone who has gotten a different essay prompt from the one i had....

Did they only release one prompt with this test??? Or are prompts assigned by state??? Region???

I*******? (10char)

I thought it was the same prompt everywhere. Originality right? CA here.

There are four prompts, however I think they may be regional. Collegeboard has released all four prompts on their website already. I live in NY and I had the id****ty one

It is my understanding that they have 2 for Saturday testing, 1 for Sunday testing, and 1 for school-based administrations.

i had the originality one. and i think it might be regional, since most of you guys had the identity one....and im on the west coast and a lot of you are on the east coast. the same thing happened in june, i had a different prompt than most people.

here they are:
Prompt 1

Think carefully about the issue presented in the following excerpt and the assignment below.

A person does not simply "receive" his or her identity. Identity is much more than the name or features one is born with. True identity is something people must create for themselves by making choices that are significant and that require a courageous commitment in the face of challenges. Identity means having ideas and values that one lives by.

Adapted from Thomas Merton, Contemplation in a World of Action

Assignment:

Is identity something people are born with or given, or is it something people create for themselves? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

Prompt 2

Think carefully about the issue presented in the following excerpt and the assignment below.

We value uniqueness and originality, but it seems that everywhere we turn, we are surrounded by ideas and things that are copies or even copies of copies. Writers, artists, and musicians seek new ideas for paintings, books, songs, and movies, but many sadly realize, "It's been done." The same is true for scientists, scholars, and businesspeople. Everyone wants to create something new, but at best we can hope only to repeat or imitate what has already been done.

Assignment:

Can people ever be truly original? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

Prompt 3

Think carefully about the issue presented in the following excerpt and the assignment below.

All people who have achieved greatness in something knew what they excelled at. These people identified the skills that made them special—good judgment, or courage, or a special artistic or literary talent—and focused on developing these skills. Yet most people achieve superiority in nothing because they fail to identify and develop their greatest attribute.

Adapted from Baltasar Graci

oh.....i guess it is regional then.........cuz everyone who i asked had the identity one.....like me..........

i had something about hereos and celebrities...

You took the test with accomodations, MathIzLyfe? That was the only prompt for the SSD test.

It was a quote (a person) that we shouldn't admire celebrities, we should admire heroes.

The prompt asked if we should admire celebrities.

^ haha that's an easier one.

yeah i had the i-d-e-n-t-i-t-i-e-s one.

I had the identity one, and I'm in Florida.

You could argue that it's easier, but since it's harder to use literary examples, you are subject to the bias of the grader, which could suck (or, it could be great). If you got two people that watched Access Hollywood every night obsessively and you wrote about how celebrities are horrible role models, you'd probably be graded more harshly.

Although if you had those same two people grading and you wrote about how celebrities are great, you could possibly get a boost.

Originality, in CA

I quoted a made-up book. Is that bad?

mj93, unless you picked an obvious fake (Psychic Predictions by Notta Clue, or something like that), no. They don't verify the factual accuracy, just how well you support it.

However, a lot of English teachers do the grading, so if you make up something and say that it is from Shakespeare, you'll probably get caught- they'd probably penalize you.

no, its fine. they dont care about correct information. you never get penalized for incorrect information.
