My D and I will not be going until next year, but since we live so far, we want to get there the night before. Anyone with suggestions of hotels/b&bs that are near enough to campus to walk? Was hoping to not have to rent a car.

Thanks
Susan

Illinisue,

Unfortunately, I don't think there are any hotels within walking distance of the campus. We've always stayed at the Hawthorne Suites which has a special rate for OCU. There is also a Marriott Courtyard across the street from the Hawthorne, but with both you'll need a car.

This is new this year and I haven't tried it, but my D lives in the Cokesbury apartments which are on campus. She told me that you can book one of their 'empty' apartments for a night or two at $55/night....comes with towels and bedding, etc. like a hotel. You'd have to call Cokesbury for details. They offer a two bedroom apartment and each room has a twin bed. It also has a small kitchen and living area. You can certainly walk from there.

You pretty much have to rent a car. Hotels are not expensive, though, and this year Dollar has really cheap rates for cars. I don't know of any b&bs.

Thanks chris and 2Ds

Does OCU allow videotapes in lieu of a live audition for MT? I can't tell from the website and I don't recall if this was discussed on the board, sorry!

Chrism, they allowed video tapes last year, in fact there is a CC'r that is a freshman there that was accepted with a video taped audition. I would, of course, call and get a confirmation of that and get all the info on what the video needs to include and when it is due (it didn't include any dance last year)

Good Luck.

I have learned today that OCU will not offer dance leveling at the auditions this year. Instead, if a student is admitted to the program based on his voice and monologue auditions, he will be leveled in dance and piano during orientation week in the fall.

That's disappointing.. I know dance leveling has no effect on admission, but I always felt like if one could show off some dance skill it might help to tip the balance if the panel is not sure if they want to admit you or not.

I'm auditioning Saturday afternoon. I'm getting VERY excited! My first audition of the season...

My d will be there on the 19th. Audition time between 4 and 5. We also have tickets for evening show.

See you there.

lexismom

Ericsmom, where did you find that out? The website still says optional dance leveling, and my audition schedule included it... Did you call the school? I don't want to not bring my dance shoes unless that's absolutely for certain.

Oh, and by the way, you guys will be there the 18th, right? We should have something distinguishing about us so we can recognize each other. :)

Does any former auditioner know if OCU gives you time with your accompaniest before your audition? I'm still a little confused. Hoping she will be able to sing whole song as the best part is last few notes of song. At least with best 16/32 count you know you'll get the best part in.

lexismom

Lexismom--you got a letter from OCU? My d hasn't gotten one. She doesn't know her audition time and we haven't been informed about them dropping the dance placement. When did you get your letter?

I never got a letter myself, and because of that I contacted Mary Mowry. She told me that my audition was sucessfully scheduled at 2:00. I would recommend calling her- she's very helpful.

Hi MTmom

Alexa scheduled her audition very early at OCU. She received the letter on 7/5. At that time it only stated her vocal and onologue audition time. It did state that she would have dance leveling and a short interview. I am planning on calling Monday to check on everything.

lexismom

Good idea, Lexismom. I plan to call too!

And parents too because we are probably more anxious then the kids.

Be calm. The OCU audition was the most organized, low stress audition my S did. Mary Mowry will answer any questions you have; she is like magic, we would e-mail or call her and the next thing I knew we had the answer. I have to admit the difference between auditioning experiences had a lot to do with my Ss decision. So enjoy this audition and if you go to Pirates my son is the pirate with the biggest sword. He got such a big kick out of this sword! Mom, its like three feet long! I reminded him he probably got the biggest sword because at 62 he might be the tallest pirate, but of cause he would like to think it has other significance.

I cant tell you about the dance except to say last years audition it was optional, but they still had to level at the start of the school year so maybe they figure it is just an unnecessary extra stress.

We are driving down Friday and going to both Friday and Saturday nights shows. I would be happy to meet all of you. I will be with Mr. and Mrs. Santa Clause (My parents are both white haired.), and a tall dark handsome man that just happens to be my husband. I have brown hair (with a few highlight), glasses and a toothy smile!

Jenifer

I agree! Mary is a dear and very approachable.

At the OCU audition last year, I think my student had some time with the accompanist right before she sang in the room and a warm up earlier.

Good luck to everyone and have fun at Pirates!

xx,Mary Anna

My son received a letter on Thurs. reminding him of his audition time. The letter did not mention dance, so I e-mailed Mary Mowry to confirm that there would be dance at 12 as previously expected. I received an e-mail back from Mary that I will attempt to copy below. I would assume that everyone going next weekend will receive a letter, but the holiday may have delayed the mail.

Be a star - I'm wearing my blue suit and flag lapel pin to all the auditions. Please introduce yourself. He is auditioning between 11 and 12 on Friday.

Here is Mary's e-mail - the applicable part:

"We will not offer the dance leveling process during auditions. If a student is admitted to the program based on their voice and monologue auditions, he will be leveled in dance and piano during orientation week in the fall."

as to time with accompanist... you will get maybe 5 minutes to talk with them and discuss your music. no time to actually sing with him. unless they've changed their format from last year, you will get to do your entire song. and to address the concern about dance not being included and hoping that will influence the panel. it won't. there is not an averaging of scores. you will audition vocally and will be scored on that. if you do not receive a certain minimum score on that, you won't be considered, regardless how you do on the other auditions. this is a music school and their focus is vocal performance. let me conclude all this by saying, this my knowledge based on last year. maybe it will be different, but i don't think so.

and to clueless, d is home this weekend and says your s is always asking if "razorback" is coming up and she just thinks he's nuts and doesn't know what he's talking about. of course, she does now. but, anyway, she also commented that he is really a nice boy and is always very sweet to her.
