thought it might be fun to see a list of all those planning to attend next year so we can be sure to meet up at the appropriate time while on campus. i know many have not made a decision, but some have. i guess we can just list them by s or d and our screen name. i’ll begin…

Thanks for creating this thread, especially since several CCers are headed for OCU next fall. I was thinking about it, seeing all the NYU threads, but just hadn't got around to it.

Looking forward to finding out who else we will see in August!

I think this is a great idea.

i thought it would be also interesting to know where we are all coming from or the general area if you don't want to be specific. we live in the suburbs of dallas, tx. we're really lucky, it's only about 3 1/2 hours for us. i know many of your are in the east. jamie

We live in western NC, so we are 16 hours away from OCU by car and 5 hours by plane (plus the hassle of changing planes at DFW). It's going to be a very big adjustment (at least to me) to have my d so far from home, but she is very excited about it...in fact didn't even apply to schools that were close to home. I am already saving up the AA flyer miles though so we can at least see her once in a while. It's funny, but when we visited OCU and she auditioned, I had a feeling that it was where she would end up (and I loved the school, but was secretly hoping I/she wouldn't!) I hope some of you who live much closer will befriend my d so she will have a place to call home away from home!

We live in Tucson and also have about a 16 hour drive to OKC, although we can drive to Phoenix and fly non stop on Southwest. I also am going to have a severe "MTnester" adjustment, but will figure out ways to visit when I can. Is anyone going to stars 101? We are going in July.

guess i better look into that stars 101 thing. are there several sessions? j

We haven't decided yet whether we are doing the Stars 101 since our summer will be busy and because of the distance involved, but who knows? We may decide to do it. I spoke with Mary Mowry in the Bass School and she told me that it was not necessary for music students and that my d could register by phone or mail. Also, my d's admissions counselor told us that there are a lot of orientation activities during the first week they arrive at school. As far as the other things that STARS 101 covers, we have already completed our financial aid paperwork and also have submitted housing requests, so at least it's taken care of if we decide not to go.

Have any of you done the OCU Chatline for admitted students that is offered about once a month? There were some MT students on there last time and my d got a lot of great information.

This isn't definite yet. I still have four more schools to hear from, but I think OCU is a better fit for me then all of them. If I get off the BW waitlist, it will be a tough battle between BW and OCU.

Lexasmomkbj, can you tell me more about this STARS 101 thing? I've never heard anything about it!

Oh yea, I'm from Upstate NY. The HUGE distance is the only thing that's keeping me from saying, "Yes! Yes! Yes!" to OCU right now. But I did get a decent academic scholarship, which will make it more affordable for my parents, which will make is easier to my fly home every once and a while.

fingers_crossed, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you and for all the others here who are still awaiting decisions. :) You brought up an issue which we've discussed here in previous years but which hasn't been mentioned this year, as far as I've seen anyway. That issue is distance from home to your new school and the resultant travel issues. Often in the rush of decision making at this time of year, this particular issue is not included in the balancing of pros and cons in the process. I know that several of my D's friends have had issues of travel and the costs involved to get home to visit and this has been a source of much stress and occasionally heartbreak (a couple of cases of illness, death of a much loved dog, and a special occasion that had to be missed). Keep in mind that these kids I'm talking about go to school in NYC which is probably the best possible location to be travelling to or from, given the innumerable options. Being located in a small town or in a city which requires connections on both ends of the trip can increase not only the time involved but the cost as well. These are things which should, ideally, be investigated at the time of application but this isn't always done. Checking out exactly how many flights are available, how to get to and from the airports on both ends of the flight, costs, etc. is important. It's not the most important part of your decision as newly accepted students, but it's one which will be an influence on your life for four years so it's one worth considering closely.

Fingers_crossed,
I know how you feel about the distance factor, but my d felt that OCU's program was by far the best fit for her as well so we will deal with the distance. Also, the nice financial aid packages that OCU offers is hard to beat (and the fact that if you want to go to their school they will help you find a way to afford it). To answer your question about STARS 101...it is OCU's freshman orientation program. It is a one-day thing where students can talk with advisers, register, complete financial aid, housing forms, get ID made, etc. They also have sessions for parents. They are having a session in April, May, June, and July. I spoke with Mary Mowry in the Bass School and she told me that music majors do not have to attend and can register by phone or mail since their course of study is pretty much set. They have a info about STARS 101 on their website, www.tgimatocu.com then click on admissions and then admitted students info. Hope this helps and hope that we will meet many of you in August, if not before!!!

Lexasmomkbj, thanks for the info!

alwaysamom, this is something I have been investigating for a while. Luckily for me, SouthWest (which is quite affordable) flies from my town to Oklahoma City. I wouldn't have to change flights, but would have to stop at two other places along the way. So it wouldn't be complicated, just time consuming. Distance has been a big issue while looking at colleges, but I feel that OCU's program was pratically made for me, and I think in the long run that will make up for the distance.

just bumping this up. surely there are others headed for ok city?

bump...anyone else heading to Oklahoma City???

Anyone going to attend the STARS 101 and if so, when? Would love to meet some of you.
Kim (Lexasmom)

My S has decided on OCU! BM-MT. Not sure on STARS 101, but am hoping he can get in the April 18th session.

We will be going to Stars 101 in July.

Looks like we will go to the June session, if we are able to work it out. My younger s plays travel baseball so it makes our summers very hectic! All of the other dates either involve missing school (d has attendance requirements) or are during the summer theater job my d has. It might be August before we get a chance to meet any of you!
Kim (lexasmom)

Did anyone else receive their tentative fall schedules today? My d did (it's all beginning to seem real now!) and we were just wondering if anyone else had and what your thoughts were.
