Ocu freshman class

Kim,

I'll admit there was some sarcasm involved. It is one of the worst drives in the counrty. No offense to anyone from the area but New Mexico is absolutely the most baren place in the world not to mention Pan-Handle America.
I love it though ;)

~Dave

From So. Cal. or Denton, TX...depending on how you want to look at it. :-)

OCU - ChrisR’s Son and friend - Arizona
OCU - CluelessMC2 Son - Minnesota
OCU - Fingers_Crossed -N.Y.
OCU - Lexasmomkbj's D - N.C.
OCU - Mtpop's S -Texas
OCU - Shauna - Texas/Cal. (Are you a freshman?)

Ah, no...I'm going to graduate in 2008. So I guess it doesn't really count. :-)

Shauna,
Don't worry...you definitely count!

Where is Class of 2009 (and 2008) from?

OCU - ChrisR’s Son and friend - Arizona
OCU - CluelessMC2 Son - Minnesota
OCU - Fingers_Crossed -N.Y.
OCU - Lexasmomkbj's D - N.C.
OCU - Mtpop's S -Texas
OCU - Shauna - Texas/Cal. (Are you a freshman?)

Who's excited about OCU's season next year? I know I am. Shauna posted this in the Seussical thread, but I thought I'd copy it into here as well:

Guys and Dolls, Pirates of Penzance, La Sonnambula, La Boheme, Lucky Stiff, and Parade.

I am especailly excited about Parade, it's one of my all time favorite shows. I know auditions for Guys and Dolls will be the day before classes start, are you (your children) all planning on trying out for the first show or giving yourself some time to settle in first? I guess we'll have all summer and orientation to decide.

Also, are you guys bring cars your first year? Everyone I asked there highly suggested it, but I might wait until second semester to bring mine down, it's quite the drive (23 hours!) for me.

My d is not going to have a car at school...I figure if she wants to go somewhere, there will be plenty of ppl with cars who will give her a ride! There is no way she would ever drive the 16 hours home anyway. As for next season, she is pretty excited about it, too. She will probably audition for everything she can, but who knows! Have any of you requested particular voice teachers? Or are you going to allow the school to assign you to someone?

Lexasmomkbj,
We were told that the voice faculty picks their students from the auditions.
Jenifer

My D is finishing her soph year at OCU in MT....it is my understanding that all MT majors are required to audition for every musical and opera...so it won't be an option at the beginning of the year. You have to get permission from the department chair if you're not going to participate in an audition. Auditions are typically held on Monday and Tuesday evenings (you sign up for a time block with about 9 other students...vocal audition); callbacks posted on Wednesday and held on Thursday evening (readings and possibly dance, dependent on the show) and the cast list is posted on Friday.

S just reminded me that both his Freshman years (HS and now college) Guys and Dolls were the fall musical! Little chance he will be Nicely Johnson again as he has gone from a 5'10 135 lbs. tenor to a 6' 1" 175 lbs.baritone. One of his cabaret songs for a local venue was "Luck be a Lady", but he is just hoping to get in this show. We know the talent at OCU is incrediable after sitting in a couple of Master classes. We too understand that auditioning for every show is required. Also they often bring in casting agents to cast the shows, so while they don't have a senior showcase the kids get ample opportunity to show their stuff in front of agents.

Lexasmom and fingers_crossed--

I didn't have a car this last year, and it wasn't really a problem. What truly saved me was having a bike (until it broke/got impounded...but that's another story). It made getting to class ten times faster, and I could ride into town (about a mile away) if I needed to. There is really no need to spend a lot of money on a nice one; bike repair shops will probably have old bikes that they are dying to get off their hands.

If I really needed to get somewhere (airport, etc.), it was no problem to get one of my friends to drive me...of course, I was blessed with finding spectacularly generous friends but it's really not that much of a problem no matter who you are friends with. :-)

I am excited to find out who I will be taking voice with! Apparently we will be getting all that information (schedules, teachers, etc.) fairly soon. I'm very curious to see where I will be placed in the dance leveling...there are SO many dance levels there; the difference in ability between each class must be minute!

Shauna

Shauna--I can't wait to hear about your dance level either hehe.

Question for all you soon-to-be OCU freshmen: Did any of you get accepted from a November audition? And (sorry, a 2nd question) did any of you attend the OCU summer program last year? I'm sorry I can't remember if anybody posted this info. There are so many threads now it's hard to keep track of all the info.

Ahhh I didn't know that you were required to audition, but that's fine by me because I was planning on auditioning for everything I could.

Lexasmomkbj, generally the school picks your teacher, but you can request a teacher. After my visit and having talked with all of the teachers, I did write MM to request a specific teacher. They will usually try to give you who you requested, but studios may have too many current students in them already, and teachers like Birdwell usually get too many requests by incoming freshman. But, like some current students told me, EVERY teacher there is good, no one is going to get stuck with a bad teacher.

I'm also curious to see what dance class I will be in. I will be leveled in the fall because I didn't audition in person. I sat in on a Level 1 Jazz and was very impressed, I can't even imagine what a level 8 must be like!

Hey everyone,
I saw that some of my fellow OCU incoming freshmen were posting here and decided to get an account. As you probably already know, I'm from Arizona, and I'm extremely excited about OCU! It'll be a great time I'm sure, and it's just now starting to hit me that I actually got in and I'm gonna go this fall. It's astounding.

Mtmommy,
My d auditioned on November 19 and got accepted EA into the MT program.

Fingers_crossed,
Several of the current students my d talked to told her that she could request a teacher, not guaranteed of course. Since she doesn't really know any of them, however, she is thinking she will probably just let them assign her one (as we are sure they are all excellent and IF she doesn't like the one she gets, she can request to be reassigned at the end of the semester). My d's voice teacher here wants her to research the teachers and make a request, but my d is not too concerned...just excited to be going this fall!

Kim

Florence Birdwell was Kristin Chenoweth and Kelli O'Hara's (Dracula) teacher, in case anyone was wondering. I am sure that they are all excellent!

Both DR3azMT and Kaed auditioned in Nov and were accepted into MT.

My S also got a November audition acceptance.

My S was a February audition - not by choice, but his high school musical conflicted with the November audition. He attended last summer's camp. I think the only other CC poster who attended last year's camp was Musicalthtrmom's D (who was accepted to OCU's MT, but is going to Michigan). I'm not sure how many of last year's campers were seniors, or what the total count is, but we do know of three others that were accepted to MT, with a few others going to OCU for Theater Performance.

Hey everyone. This is Alexa (lexasmom's D). I'm so excited to be starting school with all of you in the fall. If any of you are interested in talking, PM me and I'll send my AIM info/email. It'd be great to know people before we get to OCU!
