Ocu/nyc

Hi All,

Just wanted to let those know who will be going to OCU next year as MT majors of the option of OCU/NYC during spring break. My daughter who is a freshman MT major at OCU took part and returned home last night. OCU/NYC offers OCU students a spring break trip to NYC that includes workshops with working professionals in NYC. My daughter had to cover the cost of her airfare, hotel and food while there but everything else was sponsored by the OCU alumni association (I believe). Lots of her classmates/friends participated as well.

The week started on Monday evening with a reception for all the students. On Tuesday different workshop options were offered (students signed up ahead of time). My daughter attended a dance masterclass offered by the dance captain of A Chorus Line, another dance masterclass taught by dancers from Wicked, a masterclass with Jonathan Groff from Spring Awakening, a mock audition workshop, a class on connecting to your music, the Actors Equity, and a class on practical tips of living in New York as a performer as well as preparing for auditions. There was another masterclass offered by Kelli O’Hara that she was unable to participate in but others did and said it was great.

All in all it was a wonderful experience for her and her classmates. She is sore and tired and unfortunately sick! but learned a great deal and did some networking. The OCU alumni were very supportive of the students including offering up their couches when the students need a place to crash for a few days during auditions! She was lucky to get out of NYC last night before the winter storm (several friends weren’t so lucky and had their flights canceled today).

Just something for those choosing OCU next year to consider. She actually didn’t learn about it until January. Had she known earlier, she would have budgeted to be able to go to more shows! As it was she saw Spring Awakening and loved it. Several classmates were able to go backstage with Jonathan last night (after the masterclass and his performance at the theater) but unfortunately (or fortunately) she had to be at the airport.

That sounds like a great experience! Be lucky your D got out of NYC. My daughter was to be flying into NYC back to college today from her spring break visiting her grandma in CA via Dallas. My daughter is stranded all alone in Dallas for the entire weekend without luggage (flight from Dallas to NY cancelled today upon her arrival in Dallas) and is to fly back to NYC (I hope) Sunday night, the soonest flight she was able to be rebooked on.

Expecting 18 inches here in VT.

Jordansmom, when and what airline did your D fly out on? S said even the kids who were flying out Friday at 9AM had their flights canceled. Lucky you got to see your daughter- S was supposed to have a layover in MPLS so we could see him. Instead he was ADRIFT IN NEW YORK.
Lucky him he scored Spamalot tickets for cheap Friday snow storm night. He saw 4 or five shows in six days (grandparents gift) Pirate Queen (loved music, opening needs work), A Chorus Line, Spring Awaking, (hit it off with J. Groff? something about similar sense of humor), Spamalot and something else. He was thrilled with the NYC workshops; Alumni were so helpful and genial. He met with a number of casting agents and was ecstatic when they asked for his Headshots.
He was told there wasn?t a flight out until Monday but he spent this morning (Saturday) on the phone ? at 1:30 he was told there was a seat for him in Newark. He packed his stuff ? didn?t even have a chance to thank his gracious host as she was at work and blindly took off from Chelsea to find his way to Newark for the 4:10 flight. Let me say at this time my S has never been to New York before. He called from Detroit and said his plane to OKC was on time and that he had met up with another student from OCU who was on his flight. He should arrive only 24 hours late! What an adventure ? the best part is he really feels comfortable about getting around the city now.

Soozievt, hope your D made it back OK. S even tried to get to Dallas ? he figured if he could just get close to OKC he would find a ride up.

Hi cluelessmc2,

My daughter flew out on American on Thursday night at 9:00 pm, just before the snow started to fly. She was delayed about an hour but not bad. I'm glad your son got out today. I believe our children know each other. My daughter is Kara (originally her name was going to be Jordan, long story). Sounds like your son had saw a ton of great shows. We'll start saving now so K can see a bunch when she returns as a senior! j/k

It seems everyone had a a lot of fun and learned a great deal. She looks forward to going back again in a couple of years.

Carole

Does anyone know if this will this be a yearly event?

Sounds really good and vital to filling the "no showcase " gap at OCU!

MikksMom

Clueless...sounds like a wonderful adventure your son had!

No, my D is still stuck in Dallas all weekend, all alone in a hotel with nothing but what she was wearing and her laptop and homework. I am hoping her luggage has gone to NYC and will be checking once again shortly. She hopefully is flying to NYC Sunday night, via Ohio.

PS, I'm sure your son must realize by now that two people from camp are in Spring Awakening.
