I think that I am going to opt to send a recorded audition to Oklahoma City University for acceptance to their BM MT program. I know that this sends the wrong message (such as that I don't care enough to go there and audition in person), but it's really not a question of my wanting to attend; It's more that I don't want my family to have to pay for a trip over there (I live in Maryland). All of my other audition schools are on the east coast and we are all set for those. OCU was a last minute addition. Do you think it's even worth it for me to attempt a recorded audition? Is there any chance in the world I'll actually be accepted?

Hi CarolAnneMT!

I wouldn’t worry about a recorded audition sending the wrong message–if distance is an issue, the panel will understand. One of my very good friends was accepted via recorded audition–it DOES happen!

However, I would strongly recommend you audition in person, if at all possible. Every recorded audition video I have seen has not been as strong as I believe it could be. Recording quality factors in, and so does the idea of performing for a “live audience”–it’s a lot easier to give a GREAT performance when your audience is right there!

There’s also an interview in the live audition, so you have an EXTRA opportunity to shine there.

Feel free to PM or email me if you have any questions. I also suggest you post this in the OCU subforum!

CarolAnne - I can’t speak about OCU, and I think Georgeanne makes an excellent suggestion about posting on the OCU subforum. But I can tell you that it is possible to get accepted via a DVD audition at some schools. No matter how hard we tried to make it work, there was no way my D could make any of the on-campus auditions at Coastal Carolina last year. So she contacted the school and was told that she could send in a DVD but also told that of course that doesn’t always give you the best opportunity to show yourself. But since it was that or nothing, she sent it in, along with several letters of recommendation and followed it up with emails to the head of the department. And she was accepted! She visited campus after the acceptance and decided that was the place for her and just finished her first semester as an MT major. So if it is the ONLY way you can audition and the school agrees to accept the DVD I say go for it! Break a leg at all your auditions!

Thanks a lot! And I will definitely post it on the OCU subforum. I’m new to this site, so I didn’t know they existed. Thank you very much for your help!

We visited OCU and D decided not to put it on her list of schools as the MT degree is a B of Music and that’s a bit heavy on the music part of it for her: but we can say unreservedly it was a real nice school and the staff with whom we visited struck me as the kind of people who would be able to understand logistics - if they have a policy that they accept dvd’s, then that’s because they understand situations like yours. I know that in person is best but I think they, and at other schools, can probably tell if what they want is there enough to tell you if you have enough of a shot to come out to visit.

We have exactly the same situation in reverse, like austinmtmom - time and money just makes it really impossible to get out east in person for us. There’s one FL school she likes and they prefer live but understand and will accept a dvd audition and we figure, if it’s meant to be they will be able to tell that from the dvd and if it looks like a good fit to both us and them, we can certainly get out there then. But you just can’t visit EVERYPLACE first if you are talking transcontinental…unless daddy has a lear jet or something…
