OCU Summer Musical Theater

I think it is in the early spring–maybe February or March. Just basing this on past posts on this forum which I cannot seem to find now.

boxwoodgirl…my d loved it!! I have never seen her as happy and confident in herself as she was during and since that camp. She is one who tends to struggle socially, has never really found her group of friends that she totally fit with. She said she felt totally at home with the kids there and can not wait until next year. She is already saving up to make sure she can go. She will be doing the Jr High again so maybe they will be there together! The instructors are amazing with them, fun and friendly, yet firm when needed. They do not hold back from telling them what they need to work on, which I love! She learned so much and as of now, hopes to attend college there in the future!! Can’t say anything but positives, hope you child gets to go next year!!

I actually believe they decided the shows for the summer program in October of last year.

has anyone heard anything on what they will be performing yet? I saw that they updated the site with last years pics…my D is on there for the Jr High …woo hoo… but was curious if they have anounced yet.

I ended up emailing them and they said they are trying for Beauty and the Beast for the Jr. High program, still waiting on the rights before they can confirm.

they announced the shows:

Jr High - Beauty and the Beast
Highschool - Seussical

Does anyone know how many people audition and are accepted to OCU each summer?

My wife just dropped off our son’s audition dvd. Does anyone know when to expect to hear if he is accepted?

If you submit your audition by February 9, you will know if you are admitted by February 20. You can find more information at this link [Oklahoma City University : Music : Performing Arts Academy](http://www.okcu.edu/music/academy/sminfo.aspx)

Good luck to your son.

i just got my acceptance letter! yay!!! i’m so excited!!!

Congratulations littlemermaid13! You’ll have a blast this summer. Was the acceptance actually a letter or was it an email?

Daughter received email notification from OCU today. Since my “reformed ballerina” has only been studying voice and acting sing July or so, she was not overly surprised when she was not offered a space in the musical theatre program this summer.

However, she was offered an acceptance to OCU’s 2 week theatre voice program: “As an alternative for your consideration, this summer we are offering a new program entitled Theater Voice which will focus on intensive vocal and acting technique and feature students in a review performance at the end of the session. This two-week program runs from June 27 - July 11. If you are interested we would like to offer you placement in the Theater Voice program.”

Here’s the info: [Oklahoma City University : Music : Performing Arts Academy](http://www.okcu.edu/music/academy/theatervoice.aspx)

As someone fairly new to acting/singing (she’s taking lessons in both) and as a h.s. sophomore this year, am wondering what opinions are regarding this program. I realize it’s new, so no one can say “I went there last year, and it was…” But for a kid who suddenly realizes she wants musical theatre more than anything…what’s your gut? Should she consider it? I’m thinking yes…but I’m just the mom :-)

it was an email (O:

I got an email from OCU saying I was put on the waiting list. I am pretty ok with this, but I was just wondering if it’s worth it to wait it out? Do people on the wait list get in more often than not? Or should I start looking for something else to do this summer because it’s unlikely I’ll be admitted come the end of march?
Thanks for your help!

My D has not done the OCU program, but a friend of hers did and really liked it.
mommafrog - it sounds like this new program may be something for your D as she already sounds like she is a dancer, but wants to focus more now on her singing and acting. It really depends what your D wants to work on.

My D is a junior and decided to do the UARTS program for MT this summer which is 4 weeks. She chose this program as she wanted a training based program taught by the actual faculty at the school. They also do a mock audition and receive written feedback from the faculty. M D felt this would be helpful as she will be auditioning for schools next year.

kaileybelle: Many times they will put people on the waiting list if spots for the camp are filling up quickly, it does not always necessarily mean you didn’t score high enough… A friend of mine last year was put on the wait list and was eventually accepted into the camp… and he was then cast as the lead in their end of camp production. I also know of another girl who was wait-listed for the summer program and eventually got in and has already been accepted as a double major (MT & VP) at OCU for this next year. I may be wrong on this, but it seems to me that if they really want you, you’ll make your way off the wait-list. But I have also had friends who did not come off the wait-list ever, it’s different for everyone I suppose. I would look for other things to do this summer, but still keep OCU open as an option. Hope this helps!

Thank you kitkatt565! That definitely makes me feel better
Even if I don’t get in, it was a good audition experience and I think I’ve already learned some things from it! sigh now I just have to wait another month, haha.

I got put on the wait list too, and was accepted to Broadway Theater Project. OCU was my first choice but BTP wants a 600$ deposit a couple weeks before I hear from OCU again…eek! I don’t know what to do :(

Congratulations to all who will be attending the OCU summer MT program. It was a decisive moment in my son’s life as it allowed him to see what a bfa environment really consisted of and also allowed him to compare his talents with others who were serious about musical theatre. He established wonderful bonds and friendships that summer and it was a welcome mark in his resume. More than one of the schools where he was accepted for study remarked on his attendance at OCU. Dr. Herendeen and all the faaculty are to be commended on a truly worthwhile program.

kaileybelle and mmmaia-i have my fingers crossed for you guys!!! and mmmaia, it’s nice that you have another option for summer!
