OCU Summer Musical Theater

I have spoken with my D several times and she also seems to have settled in nicely. The biggest crisis on the first day was lack of hangers (!). Fortunately a parent in her quad picked up some extra ones for her! She really likes Dr. H - who sounds very supportive as well as challenging. She found out today that she has been double-cast as the Beggar Woman for Sweeney Todd so I am looking forward to hearing more about that. She said that the other girl also cast for that part is actually attending OCU this fall. Apparently the only double-cast male role is Anthony (as there are, of course, fewer boys than girls!).

Perry’sD,

My D is the other Beggar Women! I am waiting to hear on which night she will be playing it and yes, she will attending OCU in the fall. Her two other roommates are both playing Johanna. We had the same crisis with hangers and I ran to Walgreens to pick some up. The other roommate is from Canada and didn’t have enough either so she got our left overs.

no way! what a funny coincidence! Where are you from? and how did your D come to chose OCU? (Mine is a rising senior).

I’ll PM you

I have spoken with my daughter for a bit each night (late!), and she is having a great time. She had a callback for Johanna, but did not make the final cut. Honestly, she was honored to just get a callback, as she doesn’t have a lot of formal training under her belt yet. She was thrilled (but nervous) to make it to the advanced dance class, though! She’s never been involved in dance, just choir and drama…so the dance thing was a shock for her.

Perry’s D, I almost thought your daughter was referring to me as the mom who went and picked up hangers! Her roommate is from NY and I made a Walgreen’s run for her and the other girls in her quad, and she also got a 2nd callback for Mrs. Lovett/Beggar Woman last night, as well. I noticed you were from MD, plus this girl is 16 and not a rising senior (as my daughter is, also).

My D had mentioned how amazing the girl from Canada is, and if the other Johanna is the girl from OKC that colored her hair blonde for camp, she said she is equally amazing. Truly, she was thrilled just to be included in the callback group with such talented girls.

new -

My D said that quite a few girls were called back for Johanna so I am sure it was nerve-wracking. But, as you say, it is really an accomplishment to get a call back when there is so much talent and everyone is so motivated.

Our Ds must be in the same group, as mine is also in the advanced dance group and I got the impression that that assignment determined what small group (about 17 kids) stayed together for the morning classes.

When we arrived, my D got a slip of paper that told how they were split up for certain sessions (group A and group B), and it looked pretty much like it was divided by alphabetical order. My D’s boyfriend is also there at camp, and they weren’t in the same group. They may be divided up by dance class for other things besides dancing…I’m not sure.

I think it’s great how they are making so many friends from across the country (and Canada, even). She said there is a pretty solid contingency there from TX, but her suite mates are from NY, NH and Kansas. It’s a wonderful experience.

New,

Ditto on what Perry’sD said about it being an accomplishment on the call back. Both Johannas are from the OKC area and attended camp together back in O6 with my D. She is thrilled for both of them! I had forgotten she told me that one of them had dyed her hair!

Oh my bad. Just got a text from my D and I was completely wrong. The other Johanna is her roommate but it the girl from Canada not the other girl from OKC. I don’t know about the rest of you but communication has been brief at best.

My son and I went to the parent visitation day at camp yesterday and really enjoyed it! It was great to see my D…she seems very happy and is enjoying everything the camp has to offer. We watched the afternoon rehearsal of Sweeney Todd and I was just amazed at how the kids are pulling this show together in such a short time, especially considering the difficulty level of Sondheim material. Every time I talk to my D, she is always telling me how friendly and nice all the kids are there, and of course the same thing goes for the staff. It certainly seems like they are learning a lot and having a great time. My son, who is a college graduate already, was very impressed with the campus and the facilities, too.

New,

Where there many parents there? I wish I could have gone!

Check it out - !

I’m stupid…how?

okay I found it but it’s stuck (frozen) on the first girl singing “Wizard”. My D texted me to just wait for the entire file to load.

had to move to the mac to get it to load. My D was in it much to my suprise. Loads of talent!!

I saw it too! :D

Zappos, I would say that there were maybe 10-15 parents total? We are fortunate enough to live only 3 hours from OKC. I hadn’t originally planned to go, but my D wanted me to as it got closer…I brought her some more “necessities” from home (lordy! shoes, music books, a few dresses and stuff…probably enough for another small suitcase haha), and she really seemed to enjoy seeing us. I took some treats for her and her suitemates, plus her boyfriend and his suitemates, too…I think anything home made is always appreciated at camp!

Zappos, I know which one is your D I’m pretty sure; my youngest D has the same name. My D has been very complimentary of her talents and she absolutely loved the song she selected for the cabaret. Perrys D, I don’t know if your D is on this particular vid or not, but my D has also commented on how talented and friendly she is.

New,

Are you from the d/fw area? I am as well but frankly my D (C) didn’t want me to come. As a rising freshmen at OCU, she wants more space although she does text or call me each day. If you are from this area P/m with details. Did I read that your D is only 16 or a rising senior?

I saw your D on youtube and asked my D about her because she was so fierce! She said something about her boyfriend and that’s how I figured it out. She is fantastic!! Congrats! I love the last five years. My D has sang it many times! She picked Edges this time to be different although I don’t think the song was very PC or maybe it is and I’m out of step.

So that is from Edges, we were wondering what that was from! We have heard of it, but are not familiar with it, if that makes sense. Those UMich MTers are something else, aren’t they? We saw Andrew Keenan Bolger in Spelling Bee last fall and my D fell in love with Leaf Coneybear lol. Plus we are big fans of The Batterys Down.

Thanks for the compliments! I am going to PM you…

jdm7194 and mizpokey01, how did your kids like the junior high program? Would love any info you can share, as I’m thinking about next summer for my child.

Does anyone know when they pick the shows for next year’s High School camp?
