Odd question. but vegetarians

so i’m a self proclaimed vegetarian, and I’m a bit worried for davis…

I do understand that the dining halls do accommodate vegetarians and vegans with food options…

I’m just worried that I might be an odd ball (i know, pretty stupid).

What’s the question? Sounds shallow and ignorant, but are vegetarians pretty much welcomed? As in are there more vegetarians at davis than I am assuming?

The dining halls and other food options on campus (and throughout Davis) pretty much go out of their way to accommodate vegetarians. There seem to be a lot of vegetarians, too (although I’m not one of them). Why do you think there aren’t many vegetarians at Davis?

haha. well my ignorant/ naive response would be that there are external factors that criticize my choice of being one (i’m asian… get my drift? ahem mom ahem), and state

“you’re not going to fit in well with kids because you won’t be able to eat with them”.

Yeah. pretty naive, but just got me thinking.

Curious as to how the vegetarian scene is @ davis. :)

well, as a non-vegetarian, I can’t really speak about the “vegetarian scene” haha. But I’m pretty confident that you won’t stand out. There are lots of other people like you. So I wouldn’t be concerned.

You won’t be an oddball. There are certain times that I do not like the meat dishes at the DC, so I wind up only eating some cereal, or make myself a PB&J sandwich. Some of the vegetarian/vegan dishes are actually pretty good as well.

Nobody’s going to talk behind your back about your dietary choices… unless you’re nothing but skin and bones… haha.

When I went to Decision day a couple of alumni invited me to go to a barbecue that was taking place near the center of the campus. Guess what? It was vegan oriented. I think you’ll be very welcome. I don’t think vegetarians are singled out. The menu and meal options accomodate a wide variety of tastes and dietary restrictions (they are required to since meal plans are mandatory for freshman) so you’ll do fine :)

During my D’s orientation parents ate in the dining commons too. I am not a vegetarian but I thought the vegetarian food was GREAT! Lot’s of choices…and no one cares what you eat. You should be in good company at UCD.

I’m also a vegetarian (life-long, woot woot!), and I have heard that there are quite a few of us up at Davis. When I ate at the cafeteria, there was some pretty amazing food, and it was all well labeled so you could distinguish vegetarian/vegan/meat based from one another.

I think there is even some sort of veghead club or something like that, haha
I know a lot of the people in the domes and such have vegetarian bbq’s for the public as well. So don’t worry, you won’t be alone.

Pretty excited for the food actually. I live in a rural area so it’s hard to get decent vegetarian food around here. No more hour long drives to the market! Hooray!
