Odds at Washington (or Oregon/Colorado)

I am a junior who is about to finish the year with a 3.0 unweighted GPA (~3.3 weighted I believe). I know it’s abysmal, but it’s so low mostly due to my failure in the second semester of freshman year and my first semester of sophomore year. Before that I had grades that were alright and since then I’ve had almost entirely A’s.

I have what I think is a pretty good explanation to put in the section of the writing where they ask for additional information or the additional space section. The explanation is that at the end of freshman year I found out I was moving across the country and I started to not care about school, and I had to move back home to take care of my grandmother who was diagnosed with cancer. Before, during, and for some time after this 2 month move, I was depressed and it really did negatively affect my grades. Another part to this is that I failed my sophomore German class, my point would be that I didn’t have the same refresher from the summer as everyone else because I missed so much school at the beginning of the year, and languages require building on older information. I am currently in that same class again with a B+.

My grades eventually recovered and this year:
-I have an unweighted GPA of 3.8, with 3 AP classes and next year I’m taking 4
-I will probably be inducted into my schools National Honor Society chapter
-I took my first ACT a while ago and after just one practice test got a 32, and with tutoring I think I can do better
-I finished my third year of debate as well as track, and both teams at my school are very competitive

I’m hoping that the improvement and the explanation is enough, but please let me know how much my GPA will hurt admissions, and if I have a chance! Thanks in advance!
