Odds of Getting in...

ACADEMIA:

All my classes are AP/Honors except for French which I took honors Freshman year and the C2 sophomore and junior year. I dropped it for senior year.

Overall GPA: About 3.6 out of 5 Weighted
My School does not rank. But it is really competitive, so my GPA is above average, but not by much.

SAT Critical Reading: 670
SAT Math: 650
SAT Writing: 620
Total: 1940

SAT 2:
BIO: 700

Just took math 2 and Chem. Probably going to take history

I plan on taking the SAT again. That was my first try

AP Courses:
Biology (Last Year)
AB Calc (Next Year)
Psychology(Next Year)
Physics (Next Year)
US Gov. (Next Year)

3 letters of recommendation (AP English Teacher, Band Director(has known me since 6th grade), guidance counselor)

EXTRACURRICULARS:

NHS member 2 years.

140 hours of Hospital Volunteer work
Cardiology Clinic, did everything from filing to translating.

This summer working in the OR of another hospital.

4 year member of Model UN, won numerous awards at many different conferences.

3 year member of Mock Trial, Captain senior year

HOOKS:

My family immigrated to the US 16 years ago from Russia. So i basically grew up here. I have had 2 step-fathers in my life(still with the second one).

I will not be applying for financial aid (step-dad's a doctor)

Where I plan on applying:

I am intending on being pre-med with a major in something like biomed.

BU(First choice/Early decision), Brandeis, Tufts, UMass Amherst(safety)

How do my odds look at getting in to those schools? Especially BU?

Also, my Step-fathers sister's husband is a professor at BU, and said he would go to my interview with me when I get one. Does him doing that/ him working at BU help me at all?

Also, i’m in the Concert band in my school I play Tenor Sax and i’m in the upper jazz band of my school as first tenor.
I’m also involved in a lot of smaller stuff, just didn’t itemize it all out.

Another little bit about myself(sorry i keep adding stuff). I am fluent in Russia. This this is another little hook.

Please help me out, this whole things makes me lose sleep… :(

Your extracurriculars are very solid. I’m not sure that your nationality is a hook, though. Not a downside though, you could definitely do something with your essay. Bring your GPA up as much as you can.

What are your AP scores?

Write an essay about something you’re passionate about, make it thoughtful, and make it help the adcoms know you better as a person.

Do everything you can do to practice for the SAT.

Is the BU interview an alum or on campus? Based on what I’ve heard, the alum interviews don’t matter a whole lot at all.

I’d say BU is a mid-high match, probably better chance since your applying ED. Brandeis is probably a high match/low reach. Tufts is probably a mid-high reach and UMass is probably a high safety/low match.

Last paragraph is as your scores/GPA/application stand now.

If you get a chance, do/make/participate in something else noteworthy before you submite your app.

I got a 3 on AP Bio, and im waiting for my AP English exam. My essay is about working on a cardiology consult team while I was working last summer. We saw a patient that was released from surgery and when we went to see her she started to crash. Long story short I stood and watched while the doctors and nurses worked to save her. It was after that I realized why medicine was so important to me, and why i really wanted to work in medicine.

Also im on this thing in my school its called team 11:11, we are raising money to send a child with a life threating illness to camp. It is through the make a wish foundation.

It’s definitely helpful that you have that obvious passion. Make sure your essay is thoughtfully written though and not an essay everyone else would write if put in your shoes. Make the way you tell the story unique, and make it say something about you.

I think it would be good to highlight that theme of medicine throughout your application.

If you get below a 4 on english, I wouldn’t send APs. Get another opinion on that though (as with everything im saying) because I wondered about that myself when applying.

K, thanks for the help. As for my essay my all Junior English classes in my school are required to write one, and our teacher is really good at editing and all that. So my essay is well written. I highly doubt that many people would have written an essay like mine.

Also I would love an opinion as to what to do with my AP scores. I too am not totally sure what the best course of action with them is. So if anyone know please lets me know.

With my current AP scores, what is the best course of action as to submitting them? should i submit or not?

Don’t bother sending the threes since you must likely won’t get any credit but I think if you ED to BU you will have a great chance of getting in I wouldn’t be surprised if you got in RD.

Thanks. That makes me feel better about te situation. Any advice on what I can do to make myself seem more appealing to bu and the other possibilities.

All I can think of is to try to get a 4.0 first semester of senior year and retake your sat and aim for a 2100-2200.

That’s what I am planning to do. I need my grades to hold out perfect for 2 months next year. And I will be redoing my SAT’s in September.
