A- average
31 composite (but a 36 in English)
Very good extracurriculars
Good writer
Has demonstrated interest
He would be applying to human ecology
What is the likelihood of him being accepted early decision?

What major
According thr Prep Scholar, the chances of getting into Cornell with those stats are about 7% overall. Since he’s applying early decision, and Cornell’s early decisions admit rate is twice as high as their overall admit rate (ED + RD), he’s looking at around a 15% chance of acceptance.
But do you think he can get in with a 31 an A- avg and the stats that I posted above
@hopeforthebest82
In the human ecology school either human developement, policy analysis and management, or design and environmental analysis. At the moment though it could be any of Those three
You left out quite a few detials. What exactly does A- average mean. Grading scales are different in a lot of high schools. What is the weighted and unweighted GPA? Is your kid a senior? You pointed out a 36 in English ACT. That’s not a factor. They look at composite mainly. A 31 is very good but on the low end for Cornell. Has he visited Cornell? How are you demonstrating interest? How rigorous is his coursework? That is probably the #1 determining factor - from what I have been told directly from Cornell. Is he taking as many APs as possible and acing them?
@cotopaxi Mostly A’s but a few B+'s. That’s a 3.8/4.3 but almost no one gets above a 4.0. They don’t weight gpa at the school. He is a senior he has visited this year and two years ago. Will be emailing rep about info. He takes as many APs as possible (in terms of availability and scheduling). He got two B+ in AP courses last year. I know he doesn’t have the best odds but I’m just curious. And I point out the 36 in English because of how they compare act to the sat in some schools so no it is not a factor like course rigor is but it looks good.
I am with cotopaxi on this one. We need more information. Class rank, how “good” are the ECs, leadership, outside work, research, ethnicity, and most importantly…
Can you afford it? The school is a 70k/year. If you do not have financial aid, be prepared to pay 70k/year.
Also, I hope you are aware of what exactly Early Decision is. If accepted, you must withdraw your other applications and must attend Cornell the following fall. If you do not qualify for financial aid and cant afford 70k a year, do NOT apply ED.
@Jpgranier He’s school Vice President. A medical clown. Mock trial. Captain of various sports teams. I could go on…
I understand ED don’t worry.
GPA weighted or unweighted? Unweighted is more important.
What makes him stand out as an applicant?
His ACT is low. Is he going to retake?
Unweighted. He’s going to retake but it’s unlikely that he will do much better (but maybe he’ll surprise me). He is a good writer and creative. He is a medical clown as previously stated.
I am aware that his odds are very low but I’m wondering if I should try my bet to steer him away from the school or let him do what he wants.
A 31 is kind of low, but he may have terrific extracurriculars and essays, so honestly we can’t tell u, u just have to apply and find out. But best of luck to u and ur son, hope he gets in!
Now that we have a little more to go on, he can certainly be a candidate and you will see a little bit of a % boost going ED, but I think the odds are still against him with the ACT, but they have admitted people with 29 so there is a chance with a really good essay that clearly demonstrates why Cornell is the best place for him. I applied ED last week and have slightly better stats but not much. But I’m also a realist and turned in 5 other applications for early action just in case. I still have 4 other schools I will apply for in December - making 10 total application with just the one ED. I’d be perfectly happy with my #2 and #3 choices and they are both in the target/low reach area.
Point is, if cost is no issue and Cornell is his absolute #1 choice, apply ED. Even if the chance is 20%, that’s still better than zero and the only thing you lose is the application fee (and the chance to apply ED somewhere else, but that doesn’t sound like something he’s interested in). Good luck.
Coincidently I posted my own Cornell chance me and everyone is passing right by it. Meanwhile you have like 10 responses. LOL. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1928414-cornell-early-decision-chance-me.html#latest
Thank you and good luck to you as well. What school did you apply to? There is a difference in admission based on different schools
Yeah I know but Thank you very much!
@cotopaxi they’re mostly from you! LOL
