Odds of getting into NYU

Hello everyone. I am a senior in high school, currently finishing all my applications for colleges and I'm on the final stages.

My main question to everyone is about my odds of getting into one of, if not my top school choice NYU.

To start out with my statistics, I will list them here:

my highest scores on the sat:

650: verbal
610: math
660: writing

my accum GPA is 3.67
I have taken 5 AP classes including: AP Economics, AP Computer Science, AP Chemistry, AP English Literature, AP Government

I am in many school activities and I have held various leadership roles:

President/Founder - Independent Film Club
Captain - Cross Country
Webmaster/Squad Leader - Marching/Concert Band

I have other clubs but no leadership positions so I will not list them.

My ACT scores aren't too great, I don't plan on retaking it again:

26 Composite

Also, just today I took 2 SAT subject tests, Chem and Math 1. I think I did relatively good on math, but not Chem...

Regardless of all these statistics I would just like to mention that I'm passionate about getting into NYU. I didn't apply early decision and I somewhat regret it, but my parents would not allow me to because of the commitment to the school and withdrawal of all other applications.

In all honesty, I'd like to know what you all think about my odds of getting in are.

if you have any other questions just email me at adf5142@gmail.com

thanks for the help

Please reply!

i think it depends on ur essay a lot and ur recs
i would say low match?

Are you IS/OOS. I think the SAT/ACT scores are low. Also you state your gpa is 3.67, but have taken 5 AP classes, does your school weight, is this a weighted gpa, or uw?

Weighted, uw its around 3.53. (mainly because of a bad freshman year) no im not IS and I am OOS.

I do have very good rec letters. (my counselor read one of my teachers yesterday and stated to me that it was one of the best he has ever seen).

I believe my essays are well done, my common app essay is original and explores its own topic. Although my short statement describing the club I founded is relatively wordy, it was difficult to really get out what I wanted to say in 150 words so it feels more like a "description" than what I really wanted.

My guidance counselor and teachers have listed me as the upper 10% of my class (although my school doesnt officially rank).

What do they give for AP as a weight ---.5/1/2

Also what state, some univ. want a national pool. You probably have a better chance from the midwest

I'm from Ohio, very few kids from my school apply to NYU. (its not really that popular here) I know about one or two other people at MAX who are applying there.

Cornell, NW, CMU are all more popular here
as a weight for my high school, AP classes have a weight of 1.
(so an A = 5.0)

Than your weight is low for NYU. Try re-taking the ACT I think if you look their ACT avg is 28-31 look on ACT report and it should say what the college board re-weights your score to, that should give you a good idea. Finally look on the NYU site for their stats, or go to this board and look at college stats. It could be very useful. However, it does not give IS v OOS, but you can see the scores. Which NYU were you applying to?

College of arts and science

I dont think retaking the ACT will help, I have a 1920 on the SAT. I doubt I will surpass 27 at most when retaking the ACT

Pretty weak stats, but a SOLID PS and Essay could get you in. Trust me, I know tons of people with s**t@ss grades but got into the tops schools solely based on their essay (according to them, at least)...

These schools have enough over-achievers, make yourself stand out!

I'm willing to bet you'd get GSPed.

What does gsped mean?

The General Studies Program - it's where they send applicants who they don't want to reject but who won't be admitted directly into CAS or Stern. Most people get it for having less-than-stellar scores or GPAs.

lol, sarah_brooke makes it sound like you're getting sent to hell or something...

sarah, but can you apply to GSP directly or do they put you in this program?

enderkin, its more like purgatory, lol!

They put you in the program; it's not like Boston University's program, which you can apply to directly. I know about it because a good number of NYU applicants from my class were GSPed, and my best friend's roommate at NYU is in GSP and he acts like he has a chip on his shoulder.
