Odds of Getting Off of the Waitlist at 6 Elite Schools? How to Maximize Chances?

The admit percentages are dramatically lower today - many Ivies accepted 20% twenty years ago, and at the same time backdoor admissions were much more prevalent. Times have changed, a lot.

^The admit rate for CS is probably even lower now.

@Y2JRedskins sorry your mom is so negative. Revisit UVA or just get excited about Cornell. You have wonderful options… Be excited, enjoy senior year and forge your own path in college. You will soon be semi-independent from your parents, so make good choices with that independence about the kind of person you want to be and the kind of things YOU want to do. Don’t let your mom’s negativity affect the sense of accomplishment you should have now for getting into these top school.

Sigh. Hard enough to be a kid, today, without parents dissing their own kids. OP, as an individual, try to get past that. You’ll need to focus on doing your best, wherever you land. Try not to do this, some day, to your own.

Best to assume ZERO chance to off the WL from the Ivies. Be happy with what you have… many posters on CC would love to have the same choices. As for your mom, tell her to apply to an Ivy in 2018 and see the results. Top Ivies have many choices these days, they can afford to experiment a person w/lesser grades but more interesting life perspectives vs perfect SAT robots. JMHO

Hey everybody! Just wanted to update y’all!
I got off of Brown’s waiting list last Friday and was all set to commit to Brown today; however, I didn’t look at my inbox yesterday and missed an email from Penn letting me off of their waiting list as well! Now I’m in a real predicament! Can I uncommit from Brown, if I commit today? Brown’s deadline is tomorrow for committing. Penn has given me until June 14th or so.
Thanks to all those that gave me advice during this crazy ride.

Yes, you can always withdraw from a previously committed school.

@billcsho good to know…thanks!
Anyone have any advice regarding Penn vs Brown for CS?
