Heyyy just got my room assignment (finaaallyyyyy!!!!!)

I got Odum Village. Anything you can tell me about this? Who else got it?

Everything else seems to be full, since I got none of my choices.

It looks good in pictures (the model apartment in any case), and the private bedroom in a 2-bed apartment is only $212 more than the regular residence hall double-room (per year). I just found out haha

Considering that and that this is located on campus (south) just like any dorm, why do most people seem to disregard this? To the point where everything else seems to fill out faster. It cant be the learning-living communities alone, right? Not all residence halls have them anyways. Any other reason?

Odum Village is one of the three on-campus apartment complexes (Baity Hill is the third - the married/family housing). I think people tend to disregard it because it is an apartment and not a dorm, and most people want to live in a dorm their first year. Odum Village is also a bit farther than the South Campus dorms - it is located across the street from the hospital.

One of my friends lived in Odum for several years and liked it - her only complaint was the distance. At least the bus system is good! ; )

sahire - You could always live at Granville, it is a lot closer to campus and classes. It is just another option, Granville is also running specials for students coming from campus housing…so you could get a really good deal. Granville is now part of UNC housing, but I believe it is still separate as far as signing a lease.

Yeah that makes sense, it’s what I thought: dorms=more social life.
Well, no one can say I didn’t try, they just didn’t assign me to a dorm, so if I end up sad and alone it’s Housing’s fault!!! LOL

Everything factors in, but more depends on the individual I say. I’m not an ogress, I know I’ll find ways to get involved socially around campus hahah… In the meantime, I’ll enjoy my private room, my bathroom shared with just one person and the 1+ mile walk that’ll strenghten my legs and cardiovascular system…or ride the bus ;)

Thanks, now I feel better. I thought there was actually some catch to the apts.

Odum’s really not that bad - I’m sure if you measured it out, it’s not any farther than Hinton James. Location wise it just seems farther because it’s down by the hospital and there is always a lot going on in that area. You can take a shortcut to campus by crossing the street and going past the emergency room, past campus health, down next to the stadium, and then coming out by the bell tower (that’s the way a friend of mine used to go to get her car which was parked in the Odum parking lot). And the apartments are pretty social too, so I think you’ll be fine! You seem to have a really good attitude too which is always a plus. : )

Don’t let anyone fool you, that will be a hike every day to class unless you take the bus. If you live in North Carolina, then go down to Carolina and check out where it is before hand and walk to north campus and see how that feels. Sure it’s a little hot, LOL…you will be slim and trim though.

Honestly I think living in Odum would be kinda nice as a first year. Yeah, you will have to make more of an effort to meet people (call housing and ask if any other first years are near you and if there aren’t you could use that as an argument to move)… but you are actually pretty close to where a lot of first year stuff is happening, and your digs are much nicer than other south campus places.

It and Granville are kind of apples and oranges. Give it some good thought

I believe I read on another post that you are a junior transfer student so Odum Village may be a good fit for you. There should be a lot of juniors and seniors in Odum, but others on here probably could answer that better…good luck next year!

Oh, if you’re a junior transfer, then Odum will be awesome with no catch whatsoever!

Yeah I’m a junior transfer!
Jambaby thanks for the shortcut tip!! Looking through the maps now it’s true, it is a shorter walk, better than going around and taking Columbia St in any case. Hopefully I wont get lost the first time going through the hospital, I have a talent for getting lost you see And I suppose the weather cools off around mid-september up there, right? So the little hike shouldnt be unpleasant, at least for a couple of days a week.
