I understand the limits on the number of scholarships that can be offered for a specific sport by D1 and D2 schools,
but what is the easiest way to find out how many a specific school actually awards for a sport? I'm not finding it on the school's athletic website nor when I Google for it. Or do you just have to ask the coach?

That info is not that easy to come by. You can look and see how many the NCAA allows (for example 12.6 men’s track scholarships in D1). You can ask if the program is ‘fully funded’, meaning they allocate all the allowed scholarships. If a program is not fully funded, you’ll have to do some digging and asking to find out how many there are.

Another piece of info that is nearly impossible to determine is how many scholarships (in an equivalency sport) are available in a given year. Example, if a fully funded track program that has used its full (12.6) number of scholarships has only one senior leaving next year, and he was on a 50% scholarship - that program only has 1/2 scholarship available for incoming freshmen, even though it’s fully funded.

I would only add that the number of scholarships can change year to year. With athletic departments battling to balance their budgets, some programs are left in the dark about their scholarship numbers until late in the process.

the NCAA has number limits posted on it’s site by school classification, but depending on schools it would be better to see where they are…for example OSU has 4.5 scholarships for womens fencing that are distributed to nine of the 14 women on the team
