Off campus apartments

The thing is, upperclassmen are signing leases now for next year. I don’t think that most of them are going to take the chance of missing out on an off-campus rental while they wait to hear whether or not they get chosen for the new complex. Your daughter and her friends might actually have a shot. I’d have them all fill out that online survey immediately.

Good point, ILMom. In addition to the new apartments, there are 4 bedroom apts at Wilkie. Our D is going to complete the interest survey for Ashton, but I suspect they will be too expensive for her. She’s heard they will be close to $8000/year. We’ll pay her living expenses up to a point, but she is responsible beyond a level equivalent to a dorm plus meal plan. I don’t think she’ll be able to make up the difference next summer. She and her friends enjoy the proximity to the SRC and the library so will probably try to get an apartment in Wilkie.

is the new complex replacing ashton johnson? son is interested in the resident scholar option and isnt that is ashton?

parent56–The resident scholar option will still be there. I’m not sure which building is which in Ashton, but rest assured, there are still buildings in Ashton. Several were torn down a couple of years ago to make room for the new buildings. I’ve not heard of any plans to tear down the remaining buildings. I believe next on the RPS agenda is updating Briscoe, etc.

Residence scholars is Ashton Johnston. It’s pretty easy to get into, but they will kick you out if you don’t get at least a 3.0 gpa every semester. My son lives there and got an e-mail with the gpa reminder today. There are no plans to tear it down.

thanks, when we went to visit we didnt get to see ashton so i have no idea where it is except what has been mentioned here (ie near library) he did get into hutton honors, so if he doesnt get residence scholar any recommendations on any other good choices?

Here is a campus map. Ashton Johnson is on Tenth Street, two blocks east of the Main Library. Everybody has their preferences, but I think anywhere in the Central Neighborhood is a good choice.

Doesn’t anyone live on campus sophomore year? I am rushing but if I don’t get a bid I thought I would stay on campus.

Lizzy–plenty of people stay on campus just more move off. Don’t panic yet. Maybe sign up for a dorm with a friend that’s also rushing.

If you need any info regarding Smallwood, don’t hesitate to send me a message. I live in a 4 BR there right now.

Personally, I love living in there. Unbeatable location – most people stereotype Smallwood residents as wealthy, and while there are certainly many EXTREMELY wealthy people living in there, the lower end floor plans are affordable…

One thing to take into consideration is where your daughter is from / what type of people she hangs around. The majority of Smallwood residents are from the east coast or international students.

I’m from the east coast and hung around a lot of kids from the same region freshman year. So for me, it’s an extension of the dorms.

I’m in a frat here too (i’m a live-out), and a few of them lived in Smallwood last year. Everyone I know from the midwest who lived in there did not enjoy their experience – I guess east coast people aren’t for everyone. =/

It’s very safe, awesome location; I was a bit overwhelmed with how nice it was. But you should get an idea of the type of people your daughter hangs around with. Some people love Smallwood, others hate it – depends on your friends.

Smallwood is kind of known to be a “group” of people, and yes there are parties there, but the apartments are BEAUTIFUL. Very, very nice. I’ve been there a few times and the people are great and it wasn’t anything close to the atmosphere of the Villas. Great location too.

ElizaB,
I just noticed that the website for the Villas proclaims: “What happens at the Villas, stays at the Villas”. I guess that should have been my first clue that this is a party place. Thanks for the heads up .

JackieChiles,
Is Smallwood fairly quiet and calm during the week? Is it realistic to expect it to be quiet enough to study in the apartment during the week? Do people leave their doors open like in the dorms? Rrah commented that Smallwood had problems with the police being called there and people passed out in hallways, does this still happen?

A large percentage of my daughters friends are planning on living at Smallwood next year.
