Off Campus Auditions

Other than the Unifieds.........

which of the schools have in the past also held auditions off campus ??

and historically where have they held these auditons ??

thank you

There are many, many schools that hold off campus auditions other than at Unifieds. There are too many to just list. Your best bet is to go to the websites of schools you are interested in and navigate to the auditions page. For most schools you will find the dates and locations listed.

Dear Michael.

thank you for your response. I actually did my homework prior to posting and did exactly as you suggested and spent yesterday lookeing at each college's website. I was only able to find one college that mentioned off campus auditions.

A fact of the MT applicant's life, my child's 'list' is dependent on which colleages she is able to audition at. Any colleges at the Unifieds (offically or unoffically) have auditions that are do-able. However both time-wise and financially we are unable to fly back east (from California) at 8 different times for 8 different auditions. So she has to limit her list to the
schools she really wants to audtion at (and we will fly there),
schools that have off-campus auditions on the west coast,
schools at the Unifieds and the Las Vegas conference (there was one there that she was intersted in however it also participates in the Unifieds)
non-auditon schools.

As we want to complete formuating her list, I asked for help in determining the schools with off-campus auditions.

We realize that many schools might not have it posted on their websites yet and thus explaining why we were unable to locate the information. Other than Manhattan Marymount which comes out to San Francisco, only one website mentioned off-campus auditions however they did not have any dates listed yet it simply said the off-campus auditions for Fall 2008 entry were cancelled.

So if there are any schools that you can think of off the top of your head that have west coast auditons, I would greatly, greatlly appreciate any help you can give. I can then contact the school and get the information.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH --- this website has been a Godsend.

EnjoyThe Adventur - from what you are willing to do, it looks like you are covering it all (Unifieds, on-site, Vegas), but you are trying, like the rest of us did, to come up with the most (cost) efficient plan to make things happen. We are on the West Coast too, Nor Cal, and wound up flying East 3 times last year (D chose to audition on-site).

I did find the following (old) post to be quite helpful at the time and I am including the link for you below. It is from 'doctorjohn" who created an overview of colleges that typcially attend Unifieds, and colleges who "tend to be in town at the same time". Hope that helps a bit :D.

Look for post #48 in:

EnjoyTheAdventur, I can understand the frustration of trying to gear up for the audition grind to find only 1 school on your daughter's list that has off campus auditions even mentioned, even if it's just last year's listing. Maybe it's still a few weeks early for some schools to get the listings for the upcoming audition season and they have taken down the old listings.

In looking at the websites for the Theatre departments of the 5 BFA programs my daughter applied to, I found listings for either last year's or this year's off campus auditions as follows:

UArts - L.A. 2009 - see application
Carnegie Mellon - 2008 -2009 L.A. and San Francisco
Ithaca - 2008 - 2009 L.A.
Syracuse - L.A. and San Diego - had last yr's dates listed
Emerson - must apply to get access to audition dates and location. My recollection is that the dates go up in September

NYU Tisch - daughter didn't apply there but website lists L.A. and San Francisco

If you are having difficulties getting the info from the websites of specific schools on your daughter's list, perhaps a call to the departments could get you quick answers. Or perhaps you might want to list the schools in which your daughter is interested and then posters familiar with the specific schools can respond.

The 'non-unified participating' schools that are on her short list are:

Marymount Manhattan (Minor to accompany degree in Theatre or Dance)
New York University: Steinhardt School of Education (BM) (20-30)
Syracuse University (BFA) (25-30)
Temple
Wagner College (BA) (approximately 30)
Kent

Michael shared info on Syracuse and I found info on Marymount Manhattan.

Other schools of interest on her long list are:

Russel Sage
Pace
Milikin
Shorter
U of Florida
Wilkes

thanks again

You might also want to check to see if the schools will consider video auditions? Sometimes you have to call and ask the department directly.

I coordinate the Musical Theatre Concentration at James Madison University in VA, and even though we do not post it on our website we will accept video auditions from students who are unable to make it to campus to audition. This past year we accepted two students off of a videotape audition, the year before one student. I am sure that there are other programs that will as well.

Good Luck!

Unless it has changed its procedure, I believe that Wagner has only one on campus audition date and if you can't make the on campus audition, you can submit a tape or DVD.

EnjoyTheAdventur,

I know that Tisch does regional auditions but I actually have never heard that Steinhardt does. It may be that they do but that I just haven't heard of anyone who has auditioned regionally. If you want to connect with someone there to inquire, you can email them here:

ed.musictheatre@nyu.edu

or call them at 212 998 5154.

Steinhardt's admissions process is different than Tisch's. They have a fall open house and audition day in November that requires registration. Steinhardt requires an application to have been filed prior to being able to make an appointment for a spring audition. Unless something has changed, applicants must submit a recording to the school before being given the opportunity to audition. In other words, there is initial screening done prior to audition times being assigned, for those other than applicants who choose to audition on the open house day. As I said, I don't think that Steinhardt offers any auditions outside of NY, unlike Tisch. In past years, Tisch holds regionals in Atlanta, Chicago, L.A., San Diego, Houston, and San Francisco, all in February. The 2009 dates are not yet available. Early decision applicants MUST audition in NY. Is there a particular reason that she is in interested in Steinhardt rather than Tisch?

Always A Mom -

Thank you for the reply and the very helpful information

Regarding NYU, she is in fact also interested in Tisch, however I only listed schools that do not participate in the Unifieds.

thanks again

You're very welcome. I hope that it will at least start you on the path to obtaining all of the current info that you'll need. By the way, Tisch does not participate in Unifieds. Although they do hold their regional auditions at a similar time to that of the Unifieds, they are not actually a part of the Unifieds' group of schools. :) Tisch's audition dates, in the past, have come out on Oct. 1 for E.D. and (I think) on Nov. 1 for R.D., including regionals. It is very important that you be ready that morning to get the day and time you want, particularly true if you want to audition regionally. They fill up very quickly. Best of luck to you!

I believe that it is impossible for a student to apply to both Tisch and Steinhardt. I couldn;t tell if that was what your D wanted to do from your posts.

Sooze?

Kat, you're right. NYU allows an applicant to apply to only one of its colleges. That actually was why I initially asked why her D was interested in Steinhardt rather than Tisch. I should have made myself more clear in my response. :)

Kat and ALways - thank you...I did not know that. Well,,,, that will cross another one off of my d's list.

If you D is also looking for a BM in MT options she may want to look at Otterbein, FSU, Oklahoma City, JMU, Rider.

Kat - she did look at those. I don't know exactly why she trimmed them off of her list. The caring, helpful attitude I have rec'd from the JMU college rep made me sad when she eliminated that one. As I know this needs to be her decision I am trying hard to have a hands off approach unless necessary or requested. I have taken on the role of information gatherer and am letting her make the decision. (Trust me, it's very hard for me to keep my mouth shut but so far, so good)

A Question - Rider - I looked at their website as I hadn't looked at it prior as it wasn't on the Big List. The website mentioned Westminster Choir College. Are they one in the same ?? As WCC is on the Big List and she looked at it.

Thank You Again

WCC and Rider are the same from what I understand. I hired a recent graduate of the program this summer and we very impressed!

I think that each student has to create the list they they think is the right one for them. It is all about the right fit. Best of luck!

The School of Fine and Performing Arts at Rider is now a division of the Westminster College of the Arts. Westminster Choir College is also a division and is in Princeton. The MT program is now on the main Lawrenceville campus - not in Princeton. The degree for MT is a BM.
